Before the World Cup in 2022, Norwegian football supporters received a great deal of international attention. The proposal to boycott the World Cup in Qatar on the basis of human rights violations was taken up all the way to the top level, after an enormous grassroots movement. The proposal fell through, but still had consequences. Football president Lise Klavenes was instructed by the football parliament to present strong criticism of Fifa during a congress the following year. It resulted in the speech “A call for change”. There she took a strong stand against Fifa and their awarding of Qatar as host nation for the football World Cup, and the speech received international attention. – Spent a lot of effort Now, three and a half years later, we are again in a similar process. – What I can say is that we have a negative attitude towards the award and the entire championship. We have also told the NFF that. – But many people feel tired at the same time. We spent a lot of effort on the previous boycott campaign. He is chairman of the board of the NSA and is aiming for the award of the World Cup for 2034. World Cup elections without competition On Wednesday, Fifa will hold a digital, extraordinary congress. The only issue on the agenda is to choose the host country for the football World Cup in 2030 and 2034. Decisions that in practice have been decided long in advance. For WC-2030, the bid consisting of Spain, Portugal and Morocco has already been confirmed as host nations. For 2034, Saudi Arabia is the only applicant, and all the way back in October last year, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on his private Instagram profile that they would host the championship. Facts about Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy with just under 37 million inhabitants. Since 23 January 2015, the country has been led by King Salman, after the death of his half-brother King Abdullah. In 2017, King Salman’s then 31-year-old son, Mohammed bin Salman, was named crown prince. It is the second highest office in the country. Saudi Arabia’s state religion is today a fundamentalist form of Sunni Islam, Wahhabism, where Islamic Sharia law is strictly practiced. Sharia is a mixture of both laws and moral norms. It does not exist as an unambiguously written piece of legislation, but is formulated at all times through various scribes’ interpretations of the Koran and the hadiths. In Saudi Arabia there is, among other things, the death penalty for murder and drug offences. Executions take place in public by beheading. The country was established in 1932 by the Saud family, who gave the country its name. Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest oil exporter. (NTB) – There is a risk of both forced labor and death. The Swedish football president and former prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, tells Expressen that he has met the Saudi Arabian delegation. He believes that Fifa’s regulations set very strict requirements for host countries. – Not only on arena capacity and finances, but also on human rights and “access” in various ways. We think that is good, and that it is FIFA’s role to safeguard these types of values, he tells the newspaper. These are systematically exploited and discriminated against, claims Tangberg. Saudi Sports Minister: – Hollow criticism Last winter, Saudi Arabia’s Sports Minister Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Saud met the BBC to respond to the criticism directed at the country. – The criticism is very hollow, he began. – All countries in the whole world can improve. We are not perfect, which we acknowledge.
