Here he says that he is doing the interview as a favor to his son Barron, who is a big fan of the comedian. It is not the self-absorbed, rowdy Trump the podcast viewers are presented with here, but rather a likeable and curious figure. Donald Trump visits Theo Von’s “This past weekend” podcast. The podcast episode has 15 million views on YouTube. Facsimile: Screenshot from Youtube Theo Von has struggled with drug problems, but is now sober. So was Trump’s brother and role model, Fred Trump Jr. Trump asks follow-up questions and relates to the comedian’s drug problems. He seems genuinely interested, and explains that his brother’s alcohol problems are the reason why he himself has never touched alcohol. Trump’s brother Fred struggled with alcoholism throughout his adult life. This cost him his job as a pilot and ultimately caused the heart attack that killed him in 1981. The clip of Trump talking about this with Von went viral, and became the start of a series of podcast appearances by the former and future president. – For Donald Trump, podcasts are a gift package, because he gets direct access to the voters, says Gunn Enli, professor of media studies at the University of Oslo. Gunn Enli, professor of media studies at the University of Oslo, explains that Barron Trump has been a door opener for Donald into the podcast universe. Photo: Henriette Nordheim / news – He comes across as a popular, jovial, slightly funny and similar type. Trump got the tip about appearing in podcasts from his son Barron. That was a decisive factor in his winning, the professor believes. – Barron Trump has been a door opener for Donald Trump into the podcast universe. He has provided insight into a world that perhaps goes under the radar of many advisers and established politicians. This is Barron Trump: 18-year-old Barron Trump is the youngest son of Melania and Donald Trump. He is a student in New York. Barron has had a more reserved profile throughout his upbringing. Barron has been credited with introducing his father Donald to the media universe that many young men follow, namely podcasts. A big advantage – The contrast is great. The Democrats are very keen to have control over the message, and it goes through many stages with communications advisers before it finally gets out on social media, Enli explains. Kamala Harris visits the “Call her daddy” podcast with podcast host Alexandra Cooper. The episode has over 900 thousand views. Facsimile: Screenshot from Youtube, Voters felt that they did not know who Kamala Harris really was, because the interviews and podcasts she took part in bore the mark of control and direction, the professor points out. – With Trump, it comes more or less straight from the liver. He comes across as himself, and that makes the listeners feel they know him, she says. Large groups of the voters that the candidates wanted to reach are frequent users of podcasts. On the other hand, they are not big fans of traditional news media. – The people you needed to reach in the election campaign were not those who follow “regular” news. There were young people, those without higher education, and people who are in and out of working life. And you can potentially reach these with a podcast, Enli points out. Have you heard any of the Trump podcasts?🎙️ Yes, I have heard several. Yes, I listened to the episode with Joe Rogan. No, I haven’t heard any. Show result Afraid of losing control Bernie Sanders has criticized the Democrats for being afraid to put on podcasts that were not friendly to them, such as Joe Rogan. In an interview with The New York Times, he explains that these podcast appearances are an important way to bond with voters, and that they should not be ignored. Bernie Sanders visited the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in 2019. Facsimile: Screenshot from the Joe Rogan Experience, Youtube Sanders himself has been a guest of both Theo Von and Joe Rogan, and in 2016 he was Joe Rogan’s preferred presidential candidate. This year, however, Trump was Rogan’s stated favourite. Historically important to master new media Using the media correctly has played a big role in several previous elections in the USA, notes Hilde Løvdal Stephens. She is an associate professor in American studies at the University of Oslo. Photo: Randall Stephens In 1960, John F. Kennedy faced Richard Nixon in the first ever televised debate. – Then Kennedy was the young and inexperienced, while Nixon was the experienced statesman. But it was Kennedy who mastered being on TV. He agreed to get some make-up, while Nixon turned pale and sweaty next to him, says Løvdal Stephens. She also singles out Barack Obama, who in 2008 was the first presidential candidate to use social media in an election campaign. Nixon was used to debating on the radio, and did not master television in the same way as Kennedy, says the expert. Photo: Ap Trump’s first victory was also largely thanks to his innovative use of the media, and especially Twitter. – Trump wrote in capital letters, straight out, he commented and meant, and had not checked with any advisers in advance, says Professor Enli, – The voters then noticed that here was a candidate who was willing to try things. History has shown that the candidate who masters the media technology of the time often gets a big advantage, she states.
