The system he is referring to was introduced before the EC in Amsterdam in 2016, and is now splitting Alnes’ training group. Because both Warholm and Amalie Iuel are directly qualified for the semi-finals in the EC, while Slettum has to go out in a hectic trial heat. Line Kloster also escapes with only two runs. NOT SATISFIED: Leif Olav Alnes does not like the rule which means that Warholm gets one less race during the EC, but sees the advantage of it as well. Photo: Beate Oma Dahle \/ NTB The rule is that the top 12 in the ranking before the EC do not have to run trials, and thus only run in the semi-finals and eventual final during the championship. The remaining athletes must get through a practice heat before they can stand on the starting line in the semi-finals and final. – In principle, it should be the same. When it’s like that, we have to deal with it, says Alnes. – Not fair The rule is debated and is a disadvantage for athletes like Slettum who have to run three races in as many days in a row. – At distances such as 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles, it is not an advantage to have an extra race in the legs compared to other final candidates. It’s not no, says Slettum. MUST RUN MORE: Elisabeth Slettum must run one more race than competitors who are believed to be stronger than her. Photo: Stian Lysberg Solum \/ NTB – I think it’s a bit special and it’s probably not entirely fair. But they probably have one or another reason why they have chosen to do it that way, she says further. – Do you realize that they do it with the intention that stars such as Femke Bol and Karsten Warholm can participate in several distances? – At least it gives them the opportunity. The rule is perhaps worst for those who are around 13th, 14th and 15th place who are just not allowed to skip the attempt. They have a very real chance of reaching a final, says Slettum. – Advantage for me Alnes would have preferred to see that all his students had to run three rounds during next week’s championship. – I am trying to understand the background for it (the rule). When there are several championships, there should be less pressure on the best, says Alnes and follows up: – But really, I think athletics is a sport where you should be equal as much as possible. We are not the ones who make the rules. We just have to deal with it. And you do that this time too. And this time, Alnes admits that the rule can be an advantage for one of his students. – I’m actually happy that you compete on equal terms. But in this setting, we will not renounce that possibility, he acknowledges. Warholm himself supports that. – Just this year I feel it’s perfectly fine, he smiles. Now there will only be semi-finals and a possible final on 18 and 19 August. – It’s a slightly different thing, so it’s probably an advantage for me in that setting, admits Warholm. – More confidence For Warholm, he still knows that he missed a lot of important training because of the injury he suffered in the spring. – I’m still not in the ideal situation I had envisioned this season, but I think we’ve done everything we can with the cards we’ve been dealt, he says. RESTART: Warholm has started a bit again after getting over the WC disappointment together with coach Leif Olav Alnes. Photo: Stian Lysberg Solum \/ NTB He describes the time after the WC as a unique opportunity to restart a bit, and has been able to train more without having any pain or problems. – Before the WC it was a nasty setting. Then I wouldn’t have been able to do anything. I wasn’t sure about anything. Now I feel more confident that things work and I have gained more confidence than I had then. From that point of view, I think things are a little better so far, says Warholm. Now he hopes the EC can save the season. – The season that I had imagined was, in a way, fuming. It has been a job to get back a bit to a setting where you feel competitive. Now the EC is coming and hopefully I can achieve something this year. PS!
