Casper Stornes, 2. Kristian Blummenfelt and 3. Gustav Iden. That victory was to be the breakthrough for Stornes. Instead, he began to struggle with his weight. – In 2019 I lost a lot of weight. I struggled. There was a lot of travel and time difference, and I just think that the body was generally out of balance, Stornes told news. It would turn out to be one of a long, long series of problems in the years that followed. – I have been quite unlucky, he says. On Saturday, he was number 20 in the EC, but the entry to this year’s championship was worst. Wetsuit blister and knee injury The last half of the 2019 season was a good season for Stornes. It’s been a long time since he’s felt that feeling. In the winter of 2020, he had a problem with his achilles, and as time approached the start of the season, corona came. – Then there wasn’t much to compete in, he says. BIRD OF ACCIDENT: Casper Stornes. Here from the Olympic Park in Munich. Photo: Even Bjøringsøy / news In the WC in Hamburg in 2021, the wetsuit did not fit, and he lost the first group. At the end of the 2021 season, he got an overload in his knee, and went three months without running. – Then it was just a matter of pulling together what I managed to do before the Olympics in Tokyo. I arrived in pretty decent shape, but I didn’t feel like I hit the mark on the day. If I hadn’t had that knee injury that winter, I probably would have had greater prerequisites to do better, says Stornes sternly. He ended up number eleven in the Olympics. – It still bothers me to this day, he says. HEAVY: Casper Stornes on his way to the finish in the EC. Photo: Even Bjøringsøy / news Mowing and crashing into a brick wall This season started in the worst possible way. At the start of the year’s first European Cup in Quarteira, Stornes was struck by illness and had to stop. Fortunately, he was able to travel to Sierra Leone on a high-altitude camp, to prepare for the next competition. Form returned, but it was not to last long. – Me and a teammate had a bit of innocent play fighting on the edge before a sewing session, and then I got an elbow right in the rib. It got worse and worse, and I realized that I had failed, he says. Thus he had to face the competition in Yokohama, Japan. – I didn’t have a chance to start, he says. Thus, Arzachena at the end of May was his first competition of the season, but there too he was to feel the accident. – On the last lap on the bike, I crashed on a downhill, drove straight into a brick wall and broke my arm. It hasn’t been a smooth season for me, it’s been reasonably tough, says Stornes and adds: – It’s been reasonably tough. GIPS: Casper Stornes from the hospital in May. Photo: PRIVAT He came away with a broken arm, a small injury to his lung and some abrasions. – How do you manage to motivate yourself to persevere? – It has been tough, but I know where I have been. When things like this happen, I have two or three days where I feel sorry for myself. But it’s easy to motivate yourself, I have quite a lot of inner drive, he says. He uses the memory as motivation. – This year I have never trained so well before, I had a very good winter. The goal is to get back there, he says. LOOKING AHEAD: All eyes are on the Olympics in Paris. Photo: Even Bjøringsøy / news Having broken his arm ten weeks ago, on Saturday he jumped to a disappointing 20th place in the Olympic Park in Munich. Before the start, he acknowledged that he does not have as much self-confidence at the moment, as at the start of the season. – I would have probably had much more faith that I could win here, if the season had gone smoothly. Had Stornes been in good old shape, he would have been considered one of the big favorites for the gold. Olympic winners Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden did not participate because of Ironman. – When did you start training again after the crash? – I was in the pool three weeks after the operation, but then I could only swim with my fist. It was quite painful, he says. Stornes has been training properly for the past six weeks, and felt confident that he would handle the cycling and running well. But swimming was his main distraction. – The worst is probably the swimming. That’s where I feel it takes the most to come back again. I’m not in the same shape as I was before I broke my rib. I was in very good shape then, he says. Still young Sports Manager Arild Tveiten admits that he was only satisfied that Stornes started. – He is normally one of the favorites for a medal here, but then he got the serious injury in May. We are actually just happy that he has returned to where he is. HAVE FAITH: Sports manager Arild Tveiten. Photo: Even Bjøringsøy / news He himself calls his pupil both unlucky and thinks he has had a bit of luck. – I don’t like to use the word luck, but he was a bit lucky that he was the one who got the first victory of the Norwegians. After that, both Kristian and Gustav have taken a step further. Casper has been a little more variable. A little up and a little down, but he has also had a good development. Nevertheless, the sports director underlines that it is a matter of margin. – When everyone is training and performing well, it is very difficult to see the difference. It is a bit of a coincidence that it is the way it is, he says. Tveiten understands that the student is still motivated, despite the countless incidents in the last two years. – He knows that what he has done in training has been up to Kristian, and he was definitely better than Gustav before the Olympics. But there are small margins and he may have been very unlucky with everything that has happened, says Tveiten. He continues: – He is still young. He is 25 years old and has many years left.
