She regularly buys stamps from Posten. But when this year’s Christmas brochure appeared, much of the joy disappeared. – Our industry is so dangerous. To me, the most frustrating thing is that it is a very large company that actually has the resources to hire real craftsmen. Johanna Warberg is disappointed that Posten has used AI to create the motif for the Christmas stamps. Photo: Private The 27-year-old has recently graduated from the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts and works as a freelance illustrator. She is among many in the industry who are reacting to Posten’s use of artificial intelligence to create Christmas stamps. Primary school pupils have created the motif with AI. – Why can’t the children draw it themselves? Children’s drawings are quite cozy, instead of such generic, shiny, sloppy, says Warberg. Posten’s Christmas stamps were created by two sixth-graders in Drøbak, who were tasked with using artificial intelligence. Photo: Posten Bring/ Handout / NTB Thinks children should draw themselves Flu Hartberg, one of the country’s foremost illustrators, believes it is wrong that children are not encouraged to draw themselves. No one would react if it were ordinary children’s drawings, he believes. – The children can suggest keywords that the drawings should be about. That’s what makes it taste bad, says Hartberg. He has written a petition against Posten, which a number of other illustrators have signed. He believes Posten is now helping to legitimize KI images. – They don’t quite understand themselves that it appears very harry and vulgar. Posten: A stunt Last year, two sixth-graders at Drøbak primary school made the motifs. It has been a positive experience for the pupils, explains headmaster Frank Westby. – They think it has been great fun and exciting, says Westby. The students were able to work with several supervisors from Posten. – We lasted a whole day and had a proper workshop where we talked about both the advantages and the possibilities of artificial intelligence. But of course also the dangers and what you have to watch out for, says stamp director Halvor Fasting in Posten. Posten has had new motifs on its Christmas stamps for many years. This year’s Christmas stamps were a stunt, explains Fasting. Stamp director Halvor Fasting understanding that the illustrators react. Photo: Nils Midtbøen / Posten – We also wanted to bring children with us with their imagination and creativity. And then see how they can help do this with AI, says Fasting. – But couldn’t just the children draw this themselves? – Yes, of course they could. We’ve had a lot of that over the years. We have had both photo competitions and drawing competitions. But this time we wanted to try something a little different. He understands that the industry is critical of the Christmas stamps. Posten will not do this again, Fasting assures. – It is somewhat in Posten’s DNA to explore new opportunities and ideas and to try to be innovative. As long as there is demand for stamps, Posten will commission illustrators, says Fasting. – I will promise that we will continue to use Norwegian artists and illustrators as well. – But we think we could afford to do this for this release, says the stamp director. Concerned about jobs With artificial intelligence, almost anyone can create images that would have been impossible just a few years ago. That worries illustrator Johanna Warberg, who says it has become more difficult to get assignments. – When KI arrived, I noticed a very large decline in all the small jobs, which are the income generators for us who are new to the industry.
