The woman said she was above average fond of cats. It started in childhood. She was not doing well at home or at school. The family cat was her great comfort. It was more connected to her than the others in the family. – The cat was my only real friend, she said. Wanted to have a close relationship One day the neighbor came to the door with the cat in a garbage bag: It had been run over. She was looking forward to growing up so she could have a cat again. – That was the only thing I longed for, she said. But the cats she got didn’t demand much: They enjoyed themselves on the sofa and didn’t want to play. – It was not what I was looking for. I wanted a close relationship. I wanted the spirit and the energy and the size of Niño, she said. She first applied to introduce an exotic animal into the country legally. She was rejected on all applications. She also submitted fake applications to understand the regulations. Her only chance was to start a zoo. – But I am not happy to put animals on display for my own profit. I wanted a family member, to whom I could give all my love, said the woman. The woman in her 20s pleads guilty to having introduced the serval into the country. She spoke in a low voice during her statement in Hordaland district court. She burst into tears several times. Photo: Synne Lykkebø Hafsaas / news Run away from home The woman introduced the serval illegally through a breeder in Russia. The serval arrived in December almost three years ago and lived in hiding for a long time. – Niño was fine. We went on walks. He ran after birds in the grass and played in the river, she said. Everything changed in June last summer. Then the friend forgot to close the door to the house, and the serval ran away from home. – Then panic set in. I was up all night waiting for him. I was completely out of my mind, said the woman. Several people observed the serval in Hagavik in Bjørnafjorden municipality when it had escaped last summer. Photo: Steffen Ljosheim The servalen was observed by several neighbours. A woman who was walking her dog in the Hagavik area in Os reported the animal, which she thought was a lynx, to the police. And so the hunt for the exotic animal began. The woman quit her day job and escaped with the serval. Her marriage also ended. She was terrified that someone would find Niño and kill him. – He is just kind and good. He hasn’t done anything, she says. Video: Steffen Ljosheim On the run The Norwegian Environment Agency warned people against approaching the serval. They also believed that it could damage natural diversity. The owner and the serval were on the run for a year. The woman was arrested in the area around Haugesund at the end of September. Since her arrest, she has been on sick leave. – The person I love most, the meaning of my life, is gone, she said, choking back tears. It is still unclear what happens to the serval. It is temporarily located in Dyreparken in Kristiansand. The zoo did not want to have it on a permanent basis, because it is neutered and alone and cannot have children. The plan is for it to be relocated to Tangen Zoo. But then the importation of the serval must be approved. The Norwegian Environment Agency has not given a final answer to the application. The serval is temporarily housed in Dyreparken in Kristiansand. It can be relocated to Tangen zoo, but the transfer has not yet been approved. He said that it is not allowed to have wild animals as pets in Norway. – They are very understimulated when they are at home. It might look really cozy on Instagram when it’s under the covers, but that’s not the whole picture, he said. As a general rule, the Norwegian Environment Agency kills wild animals. Also without notifying the owners. The woman wants Niño to be relocated to Africa. It’s a bad idea, says Grønvik. – Animals tolerate relocation very poorly, and can die from stress or grief. The Serval will not fare well in South Africa. It will be too big a change of environment in the middle of life, he says. Serval’s future still undecided. The woman has done everything for the serval to be well. When she went to the store, she bought food Niño liked. She buys Sashimi, even though it is expensive. But never felt anything for herself, she said. The woman risks a prison sentence after importing the illegal animal. The prosecutor, police attorney André Jacobsen, believes that a fine is not a sufficient punishment. He asked that the woman be sentenced to 21 days in prison. – Servals should not be pets. You cannot decide for yourself whether that is the case, he said in his proceedings in Hordaland district court. He believes that it should be aggravating that the woman knew the regulations well. She knew what she was doing was illegal, but she did it anyway. Police attorney André Jacobsen is the prosecutor in the case. Photo: Synne Lykkebø Hafsaas / news The police do not know how many exotic animals there are in Norway. – There is a low risk of detection in such cases. We depend on tips or observations. In my preparations, I have not found any similar cases, says Jacobsen to news. The feline is widespread in Africa, south of the Sahara. It has its natural habitat in savannahs.
