The Record-Breaking Auction

The “Winter Egg,” a masterpiece by Fabergé, is celebrated as one of the most exquisite creations from the renowned jeweler of Imperial Russia. It has recently made headlines after fetching an astonishing price of £22.9 million ($30.2 million) at a Christie’s auction on Tuesday. The auction house highlighted that this sale not only shattered the previous world record for a Fabergé item but also dwarfed the £8.9 million paid for the Rothschild Egg in 2007.

A Symbol of Imperial Luxury

This stunning piece, an Easter gift from Tsar Nicholas II to his mother, Maria Feodorovna, in 1913, epitomizes the exceptional luxury associated with the Romanov dynasty. It is also a testament to the remarkable artistic prowess of Alma Pihl, one of the rare female artisans in the St. Petersburg jewelry workshops during the early 20th century.

A Legacy of Elegance

Between 1885 and 1916, Emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II commissioned a total of 50 imperial eggs from the House of Fabergé. Known for their sophistication and luxury, these intricate pieces required nearly a year of craftsmanship, becoming symbols of the magnificence of the Russian court. The Winter Egg, in particular, shines due to its construction from rock crystal, platinum, and rose-cut diamonds, mimicking a tranquil and frosty winter landscape.

The Artisan Behind the Masterpiece

Alma Pihl, hailing from a family of Finnish artisans, played a crucial role in the egg’s design. By age 20, she was already part of the Fabergé team, responsible for documenting the creations through life-size watercolors.

According to folklore, Pihl drew inspiration for the snowflake motif while admiring the ice crystals on her workshop window, aiming to capture their beauty using the finest materials.

The Design and Symbolism

The Winter Egg’s design encapsulates the duality of winter’s harshness and its inherent beauty, hinting at the inevitable arrival of spring. The glass base mimics melting ice, with delicate threads of water portrayed through glimmers of platinum and diamond.

Its icy exterior features intricate patterns designed by Pihl, while the interior reveals a basket of exquisite white quartz flowers—some in full bloom, showcasing flashes of garnet green, and others poised in anticipation of the thaw.
