Wolfgang Thierse Reflects on Parliamentary Culture and Decorum

Former Bundestag President  Wolfgang Thierse  has voiced strong criticisms regarding the current state of parliamentary culture in Germany, particularly in light of recent events overseen by Bundestag President  Julia Klöckner . Thierse, who led the Bundestag from 1998 to 2005 and served as Vice President until 2013, has a wealth of experience in parliamentary proceedings, making his views particularly authoritative. His recent comments shed light on the growing divisions within German politics, specifically concerning the  AfD (Alternative für Deutschland)  and its troubling impact on democratic discourse.

A Controversial Incident

On June 6, 2025, during a parliamentary session, Klöckner ejected  Left Party  representative  Cansın Köktürk  after she refused to remove a T-shirt emblazoned with the word “Palestine.” This confrontation has sparked widespread debate on whether Klöckner’s actions were justified, and by extension, what constitutes acceptable behavior in parliament. Thierse defended the  Bundestag’s  code of conduct, proclaiming it is essential to maintain *decorum and respect* within its chambers.

Changing Tone in German Politics

Thierse expressed concern over the *deteriorating tone* in German politics, particularly attributing this shift to the rise of the  AfD . He argued that the party’s rhetoric often undermines the dignity of the parliamentary discourse, fostering an environment that is increasingly *hostile* and divisive. Drawing from his tenure, Thierse stated, “We must uphold the integrity of the Bundestag as a space for constructive political engagement, rather than a battleground for personal attacks and extreme views.”

This sentiment resonates with many German citizens who are apprehensive about the  polarization  that has taken root in contemporary political discussions. Thierse articulated that *cordiality and respect* must remain at the forefront to ensure the effectiveness of democratic processes. He highlighted that recent incidents should serve as a *warning* for all parliamentarians to adhere to higher standards of conduct.

Critique of the Left and AfD

Further, Thierse did not shy away from critiquing both the  Left Party  and  AfD . He noted that while the Left has often taken strong stances against various socio-political issues, its tactics can sometimes alienate potential allies. Thierse reminded that political discourse should focus on constructive dialogue rather than *confrontational attacks*. Conversely, he condemned the AfD as a *populist* party that capitalizes on fear and societal grievances, fundamentally undermining the values of democracy.

The former President’s reflections conjure a sense of nostalgia for a time when parliamentary discussion was characterized by mutual respect and consideration. He emphasized the necessity of engaging in debate without resorting to *derogatory language* or dismissive attitudes towards opposing opinions.

The Role of Parliamentarians

As a seasoned politician, Thierse believes that those in positions of power must be *role models* regarding conduct. He conveyed that the integrity of elected officials is paramount to *restoring public trust*. According to him, it is crucial for parliamentarians to convey their ideologies without compromising the dignity of the parliamentary institution. Thierse stated, “Clothing should not convey political statements; it must be about the message one delivers.” This perspective aligns with the need for maintaining a *clear distinction* between personal expressions and institutional representation.

In conclusion, Wolfgang Thierse’s insights offer a timely reflection on the evolving dynamics of German politics. His critiques of the  Left Party  and  AfD , alongside his advocacy for parliamentary decorum, highlight the ongoing challenges in preserving democratic integrity. With growing divisions and escalating tensions, the path forward demands a commitment to respectful dialogue and a *unified vision* for the future of Germany’s political landscape. As the Bundestag continues to grapple with these challenges, the call for professionalism and decorum resonates more than ever. By reestablishing a foundation of respect, German politicians can foster a healthier, more collaborative political environment suitable for all citizens.
