– We want to ensure the most landslide-prone cities the fastest advice. Now it is the money that prevents us from speeding up the work. That is the opinion of Jon Askeland (Sp), who is the county mayor in Western Norway. Now he is asking the government to triple the money bag for the landslide-prone cities. This will mean an annual increase from NOK 400 million to NOK 1.2 billion. On Thursday, another landslide occurred on county road 5600 in Arnafjord and isolated an entire village. – It’s bingo choir the next landslide goes. Then there is only one solution that secures the road and the whole community, and it is a tunnel, says Askeland. Photo: Kasper Valestrand / news Do you think it’s scary Turid Kristensen and his daughter Janne Kristensen Hønsi live on the mountain farm Halset in the Arnafjord, and want a safer road. They use the landslide-prone road almost everywhere to get to work and school. – Now again, I thought when I received the message about a new landslide. I commute to Vik every day and my daughter is going to school. It is very important to have a safe road, says Kristensen. Daughters who go to 6th grade also want a safer school road. – It’s a little scary, because most of the time you do not know what can happen. Sometimes there are landslides, she says. Believes in more money County mayor Jon Askeland points out that the government in the Hurdal platform has promised a significant investment in landslide prevention funds for county roads. The money will be used to secure these projects: Fv. 5600 Arnafjorden Fv. 5724 Oldedalen Fv. 609 Heilevang Fv. 55 Esefjorden Fv. 49 Tokagjelet Fv. 49 Austrepollen Fv. 79 Steinstøberget in Kvam – Do you believe that they can get three times as much money for these projects? – Yes, we mean that. If we get this money, we can make a ten-year plan and rassikre these seven cities, says the county mayor, who also last February asked for more rassikring funds. He says that they need much more because other roads are also dangerous. The maturity on the county roads in Western Norway is around 14 billion kroner. – But we have to start at one end. Now the government must deliver, and then we will sign out quickly and give a safer life for many people in our county, says Askeland. Will make a plan Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård (Labor Party) does not respond specifically to the request from Askeland for a tripling of rasp money. He says that the government will take the initiative for the county municipalities to draw up an implementation plan for landslide and avalanche protection of all national and county roads with a high and medium avalanche factor. – The goal is for such a plan to be ready by the end of 2023. It will be the first step in securing landslide- and landslide-prone areas, he says. He also says that it is the county municipalities that prioritize their own funds for landslide protection on county roads. – In 2022, the county received NOK 870.8 million specifically for landslide and landslide protection, at the same time there was a significant increase in the framework grant to the county municipalities that can be used for landslide and landslide protection, says Nygård.
