Will keep the current pension scheme – news Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

On Wednesday, Fellesforbundet’s national meeting voted on the agreement-based pension scheme (AFP) for 900,000 employees. Fellesforbundet is LO’s largest confederation in the private sector. In advance, it was expected that there would be a big debate. The editorial committee was divided: eight supported a renewed scheme, five wanted to keep the current scheme. Just after 2 p.m., the national meeting voted: The majority was in favor of keeping the current AFP arrangement. Disagreements about pensions The background to the case is that LO and NHO have been working on a new scheme for AFP since 2018. Among other things, LO wants AFP to be earned throughout one’s career, not just in the last years of one’s working life. But LO has met opposition from the Swedish Confederation of Trade Unions. Many in the Federation want to keep the current arrangement. “There is great uncertainty among our members about the consequences of renegotiating the entire AFP scheme according to the model proposed by LO”, wrote the minority in the editorial committee in their proposal. However, the majority of the editorial committee was in favor of a renewed arrangement. The proposal from the majority nevertheless deviates somewhat from LO’s policy. Among other things, it is proposed that full AFP should be achieved with an accrual period of 25 years. On Wednesday morning, the national assembly agreed to keep the current AFP arrangement. Støre with AFP support On Tuesday, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre addressed the Federation’s national meeting. He made it clear that the government will contribute to a new AFP scheme. – I received a challenge from the LO leader on Friday: Are we going to follow through on our promise? Am I going to be crystal clear that the government will be involved, will contribute to an AFP scheme – also for the future, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) when he opened the penultimate day of the national meeting of the joint federation on Tuesday morning – The answer to it is “yes”, he stated and received applause from the hall in Folkets Hus in Oslo.
