Who is Samuel López, the New Coach of Alcaraz?

Early Life and Background

Samuel López, often referred to simply as Samu, has made significant strides in the world of tennis coaching. Born in 1970 in Alicante, Spain, he has a rich history in the sport, not only as a coach but also as a mentor to some of Spain’s brightest tennis talents, including Santiago Ventura, Nicolás Almagro, and Guillermo García-López. His extensive experience was honed during nearly a decade as the sports director at the Equalite Academy, which is associated with the well-respected Ferrero Tennis Academy. This environment allowed him to closely observe and guide the development of Carlos Alcaraz since his younger days.

Transition to Coaching Alcaraz

Before taking the helm as Alcaraz’s coach in the previous season, López was already familiar with the young star’s training regime. He regularly participated in training sessions alongside veteran coach Antonio Martínez Cascales, contributing to Alcaraz’s growth. However, for nine seasons, López focused his attention on Pablo Carreno, another of his former pupils, achieving notable accolades, including a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It was not until late 2024 that Alcaraz expressed a need for López’s guidance, shifting the dynamic of their relationship from peers to coach and player.

Coaching Philosophy and Approach

López emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and personal development in his coaching style. “We have put a lot of emphasis on being yourself. Be very clear about what you have to do, your routines, your attitude; that is above everything,” he stated in an interview with Eurosport. This philosophy resonates well with Alcaraz’s approach to tennis, which prioritizes an authentic self-expression on the court.

López acknowledged the foundational role that Juan Carlos Ferrero, the previous coach, played in shaping Alcaraz’s career. “I have been working with Juan Carlos Ferrero for many years and the work comes from him. I will not come back. I have known him for a long time, and I think my experience can contribute,” he said. López’s strategy is to build on the established groundwork while adding his unique perspective.

Recent Achievements

López had the opportunity to celebrate monumental victories alongside Alcaraz, including triumphs at Roland Garros and the US Open. His contributions were recognized by the ATP circuit, as he and Ferrero were awarded the title of joint Best Coaches of the Year, a significant recognition of their collaborative efforts in coaching one of the most promising talents in tennis.

Looking Ahead

As Samuel López continues his coaching journey with Carlos Alcaraz, the tennis community will undoubtedly be keenly observing how their partnership evolves. López’s blend of experience, innovative coaching methods, and commitment to player development sets a strong foundation for Alcaraz’s future endeavors in the sport. With both coach and player aiming for greatness, the upcoming seasons may reveal even more exciting chapters in their respective careers.
