Understanding the 2025 National Census in Peru

The upcoming Census 2025, organized by the National Statistics and Informatics Institute (INEI), is poised to begin on August 4, 2025. This monumental initiative aims to visit approximately 14 million homes over the subsequent weeks, constructing a comprehensive and current portrait of the population and living conditions in Peru.

After an eight-year interval since the last census, this project introduces a significant upgrade with thousands of censors utilizing digital technology. This innovation promises to not only speed up the data collection process but also enhance the overall census experience for households.

Throughout the months leading to October, INEI teams will traverse the national landscape, clearly identified by their credentials, vests, caps, and electronic tablets, which will replace outdated paper forms. This technological advancement aims for more efficient data capture and drastically reduces processing times. In fact, while past results could take up to two years to finalize, the goal is to have the results available within five months post-collection.

Improved Process for Household Data Collection

A significant change in this census is that it will no longer require all household members to be present during the visit. Only one individual over the age of 18, who can either be the responsible party or someone knowledgeable about the household’s residency, is needed to answer the censist questions.

To prepare households for the upcoming survey, each home will receive a written notification a week prior to the team’s arrival, ensuring that inhabitants are ready for the interview.

The National Census 2025 aims to provide exact figures on the number of residents in the country, their distribution across natural regions such as the Costa, Sierra, and Selva, as well as insights into their living conditions. The census will also update the total population count, currently estimated to include factors like internal migration, urban growth, and the influx of foreign residents.

Utilization of Census Data

The information gathered will be instrumental for national and local authorities when planningsocial programs, distributing resources, and designing public policies tailored to the realities of each region. The confidentiality of the data collected is protected under the Census Law, which ensures the appropriate use of the information.

One of the standout features of the new census is the integration of digital technology for both data capture and management. This year’s questionnaire will incorporate additional questions that reflect a more diverse and inclusive view of national identity.

The questionnaire will feature dedicated sections on ethnic and linguistic self-identification. This initiative, resulting from a partnership between INEI and the Ministry of Culture, will facilitate the identification of members of the 55 indigenous and original peoples, the 48 languages spoken within the territory, as well as Afro-Peruvian populations and other culturally diverse groups.

The national form is meticulously crafted to capture various aspects of life in Peru. The section concerning dwellings will inquire about the type and condition of buildings, predominant materials for walls, ceilings, and floors, the number of rooms, and the availability of essential services such as electricity, drinking water, drainage, and more.

The scope of investigation will extend to waste removal, water supply, and domestic equipment availability, including refrigerators, kitchens, microwaves, computers, radios, and cars.

Furthermore, regarding households, the census will identify the number of family groups sharing the same dwelling, the number of inhabitants per home, their relationships, any temporary absences due to work, study, or health issues, and the presence of guests or workers residing in the household.

Individual and Economic Data Gathering

The individual section will ask for the names and surnames, sex, age, nationality, and place of birth of household members. New questions regarding prior residences, internal or international migration, education levels, and individual access to technology such as cell phones or computers will also be included.

Data regarding economic activity will shed light on employment types, employment status, and typical workplaces, along with inquiries about seeking employment.

Additionally, inquiries will focus on health insurance, including types of coverage and associated medical facilities. For women of childbearing age, questions will explore the number of live children born, those currently living, and any deceased, as well as the age at which they gave birth for the first time. The census will also document instances of disability, specifying the type and degree.

Ensuring Security and Participation in the Census

The organization of the census emphasizes population security. All censors will be professionally identified with institutional attire and will provide prior notifications to each household to prevent any surprises.

The campaign “We all add Peru” aims to reinforce the importance of community participation in this process. The data collected will contribute to the inclusion and planning of the nation’s development efforts.

The official launch of the initiative will occur in a central celebration at the National Stadium, attended by key national authorities. Awareness campaigns such as “I identify with pride” urge citizens to share information reflecting the cultural richness and diversity of the entire nation.

Ultimately, INEI emphasizes that all data collected will remain confidential, governed by the Census Law, enabling the identification of pressing needs, guiding resource allocation, and facilitating the planning of a more prosperous Peru for the years to come.
