– We live second by second, and we count these seconds. We can’t sleep. In the morning we have to get food of some kind for our children, and some water, says Amjad Shawa. He tells about his 75-year-old neighbor who is said to have died because no one could help him escape. So far, over 8,000 people have been killed in Gaza. – Never in my life could I have imagined ending up in such a situation. To be so afraid. Afraid for my family, my friends, and my own life. Having to work so hard just to get hold of a bottle of water and struggle to get hold of some food. According to the UN organization UNRWA, more than 80 trucks with emergency aid have entered the Gaza Strip in one week. Elsewhere in the city, Adam Zorub is queuing to get water. – The water supply that was available before has been cut, he says. Together with hundreds of others, he now has to lie on one municipal well to get the vital liquid. On Sunday, Israel will have reopened a water pipeline from Israel to Gaza, according to the newspaper Haaretz. After the attack by Hamas, Israel introduced a full blockade of Gaza and cut off all imports of water, food, medicine and fuel. Fears societal collapse After the terrorist attack by Hamas on 7 October, Israel has retaliated against the Gaza Strip. This has led to nearly 640,000 people being internally displaced, according to the UN’s aid organization for Palestinian refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA).
