Was attacked by tiur in Nordland – I did not want to hurt him – NRK Nordland

Stein-Evert Pettersen was only to spend the night in the hammock. With nice spring weather and snow on the mountain tops, everything was in place for a magical overnight stay in the fields around Efjord in Nordland. But the hammock never came in the bag. Pettersen therefore settled down in the heather, with the zipper on the sleeping bag well pulled up around his neck. Earlier that evening he had seen a tiur a little further down in the field which he had filmed and taken a picture of. He assumed that it was 60-70 meters away, and therefore did not think about it any more when he went to bed for the evening. Stein-Evert Pettersen settled down in the sleeping bag on a small pile. He was attacked while in the sleeping bag, and therefore could not escape from the scene. Photo: Stein-Evert Pettersen Attacked Suddenly, Pettersen heard a sound just a few meters away. – I think it was exciting to begin with. I had never met the tiuren before. But the special bird wanted more than a friendly acquaintance. It began to swell, and would not leave Pettersen alone. – I kept him away with the camera tripod for a long time. But then he began to become even more aggressive. Suddenly he makes an attack and goes on the attack. He flapped straight at my face. Pettersen is at this point with the zipper up to the armpits, and is struggling to defend himself. A folded camera tripod was used for a long time to keep the bird away, but it did not give up. Photo: Stein-Evert Pettersen Basketak – I did not want to hurt him. I enjoy bird life. But when he was so close to my face and went on the attack, I had to protect myself. Finally, Pettersen gets a grip around the bird’s neck and throws it a few meters away. – Then that was enough. But it came back just as quickly. After a basket case that lasted a total of 11 minutes, Pettersen loosened the sleeping bag and threw the bird over a small cliff. Stein-Evert Pettersen ended up in a basket with a tiur. In the end, the big bird became so approachable that Pettersen had to intervene physically. Photo: Stein-Evert Pettersen – Then he flew away. Both came unscathed from the fight, but a shaken Pettersen had to pack his things and return home. The unique session was captured on film and the page posted on YouTube. Tiurleik A tiurleik is a gathering place where the tiur stays in the spring to compete for the char’s favor. The boys are on show, while the ladies choose the one they think will be best suited to pass on the genes. As a rule, the chars choose the same tiuren, and a tiur can have up to 20 chars around him before he starts mating with them. Most tiurleiker are located in relatively open pine and bare mixed forests, and are spread out in the forest landscape with a distance of 1-2 km. In grandominated forest areas, the toys can also be found in pure spruce forest. The games are usually in old forests, but in some cases new tiur games are established in younger forests. The game activity usually starts at the end of March, but it happens that the tiuras also play in the middle of winter. Høneuka, the time when the chars seek out the games to be mated, is usually at the end of April in Eastern Norway and in the first two weeks of May further north in the country. (Source: Villmarksliv) Gambling tiur It is a known phenomenon that tiur can behave aggressively when it is time for tiur play in the spring. Fortunately, this does not happen often. But if you are unlucky and meet an aggressive or tiur, then there is not much you can do. – The only thing you can do is to get to safety, get away from the situation. This is what Hans Christian Pedersen, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Natural Research (NINA), says. – The so-called game-crazy tiures actually appear anywhere near where it usually keeps houses, so it is impossible to avoid them as they often seek out people. A gambling tiur is a tiur who has lost his natural shyness towards humans. It can also attack cars, its own reflection, dogs and other animals. – There are different theories as to why they become like that, but one theory is that they get too high testosterone levels. They get a little overzealous.
