Warns of fire hazard after dry-boiled food on the stove – news Vestfold and Telemark – Local news, TV and radio

It could have gone really wrong, but luckily the emergency services arrived in time. The fire service is now urging people to take an extra round before going out for the night. Dramatic in Horten The incident was reported to the emergency services just after 1am on Saturday. – The fire alarm system had been triggered in the building and a resident called 110. When we arrived, all but one had been evacuated, says Jardar Aftret. He is a fire marshal in the Vestfold intermunicipal fire service. The crew knocked on the door, but got no response. – They broke open the door, and were met by a wall of smoke. Smoke divers jumped in and had the stove turned off, he continues. The cause turned out to be severe dry boiling. The crews searched the smoke and found a person on the couch. – They tried to shake the person in question, but there was no reaction, says the fire chief, who does not know whether the resident was drunk or just fast asleep. Fortunately, the man was fine, apart from inhaling quite a bit of smoke. Dry cooking is a common cause of fires in Norway, not least at Christmas time. The fire service asks people to do an extra round of checks before going to bed in the evening. Among other things, they recommend installing a stove guard for increased safety. – If you are drunk or high, you should ditch the hot food. Have a slice of bread for dinner instead. Take a security round of the home every single evening. Check that the stove is turned off and that candles have been blown out, urges Aftret. For many of us, it is life-threatening to try to put out a fire that has managed to get bigger than a fire. – The only thing that matters is to get out safely, notify any others in danger and then call 110. Most fatal fires affect residents who are alone when the fire starts.
