The Moscow region was the target of a massive attack by more than 400 Ukrainian drones on the night of Sunday, July 19, to Monday, July 20. This unprecedented assault resulted in at least two injuries and significant material damage. According to Russian authorities, 85 drones were destroyed as they approached the capital.
More than 400 drones were launched overnight towards the Moscow region, as confirmed by the mayor of Moscow on Monday morning. In a statement, the mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported, “From 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., more than 400 enemy drones headed towards the Moscow region. Most of them were neutralized by air defense forces while they were still far from the city. Eighty-five drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow.”
In a concerning development, six individuals were reported injured due to explosions, and they were transported to Domodedovo hospital, located south of Moscow. The hospital did not clarify whether these injuries were directly linked to the drone strikes.
Targeted Areas: Domodedovo, Podolsk, and Odintsovo
The regional governor, Andrei Vorobiov, indicated that damage was reported in the cities of Domodedovo, Podolsk, and Odintsovo. He mentioned the destruction of private residences and civilian infrastructure as a result of the drone strikes.
Vorobiov also noted, “According to preliminary information, one person was injured in Domodedovo due to a fire in a private house, and another on the M-4 highway, where a drone fell near a vehicle.” He refrained from stating whether these victims were included in the earlier report by the mayor.
Escalation of Attacks
This drone strike comes on the heels of increased tensions and intensified attacks in the ongoing conflict. Just a night prior, the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, was targeted by what President Volodymyr Zelensky described as one of the “largest ballistic missile attacks.” Zelensky reported one casualty and 16 injuries due to that assault, highlighting the rising violence in the region.
Ukrainian officials claim that these recent drone and missile strikes are part of a broader strategy to target Russia’s hydrocarbon infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s financial capabilities for sustaining its military operations.
