The weapon is called GLSDB and has been under development since 2014. If the Ukrainians get these flying bombs, they will be able to reach Russian targets that are now out of reach. It is Reuters who writes that Boeing and Saab want to deliver the system to the Ukrainians. They won’t do this for free. They want the Americans to buy the bombs and give them to Ukraine. ROCKET OPERATION: The glide weapon will be fired from rocket launchers the Ukrainians already have many of. When the rocket motor is burnt out, it is separated from the bomb which then continues towards the target. Photo: Saab The relatively inexpensive GLSDB consists of two components that are already mass-produced. These are the engines in the US rocket artillery and GBU-39 aerial bombs. The GBU-39 is used among many others by the Norwegian Air Force. The GLSDB will be launched from the HIMARS vehicle and then glide to the target. It is a precision weapon that uses both GPS and inertial navigation. The precision must be one meter. GBU-39 is also called small diameter bomb. It is a flying bomb with folding wings. The bomb costs approximately NOK 400,000. The engine is one of several components in rockets, each of which costs up to one million kroner. WELL KNOWN: GBU-39 is dropped from an F35. The technology that makes these bombs precise has been thoroughly tested. Photo: USAF Meeting a need The Ukrainians say they have benefited greatly from the American rocket artillery. Since this summer, they have used the HIMARS and M270 vehicles to send out many hundreds of rockets against the Russians. The offensive in Kherson was made possible, among other things, because of this long-range artillery. The rockets can hit targets up to 80-90 kilometers from the launch site. In response, the Russians have placed their supply bases outside this range. The glide bombs will be able to hit these bases, forcing the Russians to move them further back. This will make the supply situation difficult. HEAVYWEIGHTS: Ukrainians want Atacms. With this missile weapon, they can also hit targets in the occupied Crimea. Photo: US MIL Wants something else The GLSDB is not a weapon the Americans have used so far. There are therefore few of them. Boeing writes in a document Reuters has seen that large-scale production can start quickly and that they can be delivered to the Ukrainians in the spring. What the Ukrainians have repeatedly asked for is the Atacms missile weapon. There are large quantities of it in stock. There are political reasons why the Ukrainians have not received Atacms. President Joe Biden wrote on May 31 that the United States will not deliver weapons that enable the Ukrainians to hit targets in Russia. With Atacms, the Ukrainians can hit targets far into Russia. It can also hit all Russian targets in the occupied territories. GLSDB cannot.
