The volcano is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula on the east coast of Russia, northeast of Japan. Air traffic is on alert. The eruption was triggered by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 off the peninsula on Saturday evening, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The first major eruption from the volcano was in 2007. After the earthquake, there were reports of “strong shaking” and “moderate to major damage” in the nearest city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a population of over 150,000 people. According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), planes have been issued a “code red” warning, the highest warning level for a significant amount of ash in the atmosphere. They depict explosions from the Sjivelutj volcano sending ash up five kilometers into the air, with the ash column stretching about 1,500 kilometers east-southeast.
