A new volcanic eruption has started in Iceland, reports the Icelandic broadcaster RUV. After an earthquake in the morning hours, an eruption was reported at 9 am Norwegian time. The outbreak appears to be at Sundhnúk, quite far from the town of Grindavik. The broadcaster also reports that all residents of Grindavik must be evacuated. Waiting for information The Coast Guard’s helicopter has set out with teams of researchers to investigate the exact location of the volcanic eruption. It is still not entirely clear exactly where the lava comes from or in which direction it is going. To RUV, natural hazard expert Benedikt Ófeigsson says that it is also difficult to say how big the outbreak will be. – There is no way for us to say whether or how similar today’s outbreak is to the previous outbreak. Have evacuated Grindavik On Saturday evening, the roughly 4,000 inhabitants of Grindavik were told to leave the town by Monday evening. After Monday evening, it is forbidden to be in the city, and the ban lasts for three weeks. Víðir Reynisson, the police chief of the civil defense, told RÚV that the evacuation of Grindavík was successful. – Now I’m just waiting to see what happens next. Although the deadline to evacuate is set for Monday evening, the authorities advised residents not to be in the city for the next few days.
