– It is perfectly fine that our delegates are determined by how many we have in Trondheim and Trøndelag based on who we have in Trøndelag. I have said all along that it is fine, says Trond Giske to news. – But the fact that they should count for other counties is very strange, he adds. – Why is it strange? – Because it will give increased representation to counties where they are not members, says Giske. – Why does the central government go for this variant? – You have to ask them about that. Those who choose to be associated with a party branch where they are registered are included in the representation in the municipality where they are registered. – The change we are making is that representation follows the municipality the members are registered in, says party secretary Kjersti Stenseng VG. She says this is the most democratic model. In practice, this means that all the members of Nidaro’s Social Democratic Forum from Oslo will contribute to making Oslo’s delegation at the Labor party meeting bigger and Trøndelag’s smaller. Nidaros Social Democratic Forum is Giske’s local team in Trondheim. – People who joined Nidaros Social Democratic Forum and live in Oslo have made a conscious choice. That they should suddenly give voting weight to Oslo, a county team where they have no influence, is very strange, says Giske. According to the current rules, a person can be an Ap member in any local team they want, regardless of place of residence. It also means that the team you are a member of gets representation at annual meetings in both the municipality, the county team or Aps national meeting. Half of them live outside Giske’s local team has in a short time grown to become one of Ap’s largest local teams. Before Christmas, the party had 2968 members, around 1500 of them in Trondheim and the rest of Trøndelag, according to Giske. This means that around half of Nidaros’ members live outside the municipality and county. – At the national meeting delegation, this means that the 1,500 members outside Trøndelag are distributed among other counties. In practice, this means that Trøndelag will get nine fewer national meeting delegates, which other counties will get, based on the current membership, says Giske. It was the Labor Party’s parliamentary representative Lubna Jaffery who led the committee that looked at the statutes and considered changes. APS central board has had the report for consideration in recent weeks and now has its recommendation ready. The matter will now be heard in the county councils and finally adopted at Aps’ national meeting in May.
