VAT on electric cars does not occur until the new year – but you will be caught now if you buy today – news Vestland

The manager of Møller Bil in Bergen, Frank Olsen, walks through a sea of cars at the car dealership every day, showing one grin after another. Fully 95 percent of the cars sold here are electric. – There has been a revolution here in recent years, says Olsen. In June, it was decided that electric cars costing more than NOK 500,000 will not be exempt from VAT. Not 600,000, as the government promised in the Hurdal platform. The rules come into force on 1 January 2023, but due to the long delivery time, it is best to get a car delivered before that time if you buy today. Could you imagine this car? Then you have to be patient. And a few extra kroner. The pandemic affects, and now also this tragic war in Ukraine, says Olsen. With VAT, a new electric car that costs NOK 600,000 will receive 25 per cent VAT on the last NOK 100,000. This amounts to NOK 25,000. Some customers are probably a little disappointed and surprised, because the impact point was expected to be a little higher, says Olsen. NAF: – Too early to introduce VAT on electric cars Nils Sødal is a communications advisor at NAF, and believes that the time is not ripe to introduce VAT. – In addition, we are critical of the government going back on what they promised in the Hurdal platform, says Sødal. Nils Sødal in NAF. Photo: NAF In June this year, the government entered into an agreement with the Socialist Left Party to lower the VAT limit on new electric cars by a further NOK 100,000. According to Sødal, this will happen to ordinary families. – Many of the popular family electric cars end up somewhere between NOK 500 and 600,000. So then there are many attractive family cars that become more expensive from the New Year. You can buy electric cars with a long range in all price ranges. The Ministry of Finance does not agree with NAF that it necessarily affects families with children. – Today you can buy electric cars with a long range in all price ranges. We therefore think it is fair that those who choose to buy the most expensive cars pay value added tax, says State Secretary Lotte Grepp Knutsen (Ap) Lotte Grepp Knutsen (Ap) believes there are many good alternatives that do not exceed NOK 500,000.
