On Wednesday, there were attacks on several Palestinian towns. In Khan Younis, the head of the UN’s aid organization for Palestinian refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) claims that Israel targeted their compound directly. Israel has asked residents to leave several areas in the city, including where the Nasser hospital and other health buildings are located. At a press conference in the US State Department on Wednesday evening, the attack on the UNRWA facility is called “deeply disturbing”. – We react strongly to today’s attack on the UN facility in Khan Younis, says spokesperson Vedant Patel. The city of Khan Younis is Gaza’s second largest, and lies in the south of Palestine. – Civilians must be as safe as possible, UN territory must be respected and aid workers must be able to be safe in providing vital help to the population, Patel argued. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) claims the attack on the besieged city is part of the elimination of terrorist infrastructure. – The soldiers are accompanied by rocket attacks from the air. These targeted attacks clear the area for the ground forces, write the IDF on Telegram. Already on Tuesday, the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Ministry of Health claimed that Israeli tanks fired at the hospital in the south of the Gaza Strip. – They fired at the top floors of the building for surgery and the emergency department. Tens are injured, according to a statement from the ministry. – UN buildings clearly marked UNRWA director Thomas White claims artillery rounds from two tanks hit the building which houses 800 people. Nine people are said to have been killed and at least 75 injured after the attack. – Safe access to and from the center has not been possible for two days, says White. According to UN diplomat Philippe Lazzarini, the Khan Younis complex is one of UNRWA’s largest, housing close to 30,000 internally displaced persons. – The complex is clearly marked UN buildings and Israeli authorities are familiar with the coordinates, as for all our facilities, Lazzarini wrote on X/Twitter. In December, he blamed Israel for wanting to drive Gaza’s residents to Egypt. Destruction in the border town The town of Rafah is located all the way south of Gaza. A fraction of the emergency aid needed in the Palestinian areas comes in from the Egyptian side of the border. Pictures from there show a mosque that is level with the ground, after what according to Reuters is an Israeli rocket attack on Wednesday. Palestinians have gathered around the crater of a mosque that was razed to the ground in an Israeli attack on Wednesday. Photo: Fadi Shana / Reuters Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi blames Israel for preventing the introduction of food, drink and medicine to Palestinians. – The border crossing is open 24/7. But the processes that take place on the Israeli side are to blame for the fact that so little gets through, says al-Sisi in a speech on Wednesday. Two thirds displaced in the Gaza Strip A total of 1.7 million have been displaced from their homes in the Gaza Strip since October, according to UNRWA. Most of them have fled from the northern areas, where most homes, buildings and infrastructure have been razed to the ground after Israeli attacks, writes NTB. Since 7 October, when Hamas attacked Israel, 25,700 Palestinians are said to have been killed as a result of Israel’s retaliation. Netanyahu rejects a Palestinian state. His allies hope the Palestinians left Gaza for good.
