8 July 2023 at 16:06 Ukrainian prisoners come home Five Ukrainian prisoners of war, who have been given hero status in Ukraine, are coming home today. A video posted on Twitter shows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcoming the soldiers. Zelenskyj travels home from Turkey on the same plane as the soldiers. He himself has had a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The soldiers were handed over by Russia on 21 September 2022, as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia. They have since stayed in Turkey, as part of the exchange agreement. The five are commanders of the Azov Regiment. They were taken when Ukraine ordered them to give up the defense of Mariupol in May 2022, to save the soldiers’ lives. The soldiers had held the fort in the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.
