1 October 2023 at 17:07 Europe won the Ryder Cup after a nerve-wracking finish – Hovland history Europe had a lead of five points before the closing day of the Ryder Cup. There they needed four of the twelve available points and Europe sent out its biggest stars from the start. Viktor Hovland was among those who secured early points for Europe, who went from leading 10.5-5.5 before the day to 14-8. Then they only needed half a point more to take the victory, but eventually it was the Americans who started to collect the points. Matt Fitzpatrick had the opportunity at 14-8 but missed his birdie putt on hole 18. Instead, it was in the next-to-last match that victory was finally secured as Tommy Fleetwood secured a two-hole lead with two holes to play – so that he was thus secured the necessary half point for Europe. After the final see-saw games largely went in Europe’s favour, it was finally a comfortable victory, 16.5-11.5. For Viktor Hovland it was a very good Ryder Cup, where he scored 3.5 out of 5 points in the five matches he played. In 2021, Hovland became the first Norwegian to play in the Ryder Cup and, with this year’s victory, he is therefore the first Norwegian to win the Ryder Cup. Suzann Pettersen has several times been on the winning team for Europe in the Solheim Cup, the female equivalent of the Ryder Cup.
