Tragic Fire Claims Life of 91-Year-Old Woman in Almagro
A devastating fire broke out in a residential building located at the intersection of Yatay and Avenida Rivadavia in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Almagro this Saturday, resulting in the unfortunate death of a 91-year-old woman. First responders reported that over 30 neighbors from the affected property required assistance due to the incident that left them in distress.
Alberto Crescenti, the head of the Emergency Medical Care System (SAME), confirmed the tragic news: “Unfortunately, she is a woman older than approximately 91 years, deceased on the first floor.” The authorities revealed that the fire originated in a small bedroom on the first floor, measuring approximately two meters by two meters.
Emergency Response and Victim Rescue
Upon arrival, city firefighters quickly entered the department and discovered the lifeless woman, who according to Crescenti was left “calcined” by the flames. In addition to the fatality, emergency teams were assigned to assist 32 additional neighbors affected by the smoke and chaos of the fire, including at least two minors.
Of those affected, 23 received immediate care from SAME officials present on the scene, while others were transported to various health centers across the city. Four individuals were taken to the General Hospital of Acute Carlos G. Durand, three to the General Hospital of Acute Dr. Teodoro Álvarez, one to the General Hospital of Acute José María Ramos Mejía, and another to the Donación Francisco Santojanni.
Community Impact and Response Measures
The fire department effectively controlled the situation, conducting ventilation and evacuation missions throughout the building to ensure residents’ safety. According to Crescenti, they thought the fire had spread further, but it was mainly localized to the first floor where the deceased woman was found. Only after firefighters established a secure zone could they assess the tragic situation.
Rivadavia Avenue saw restricted circulation from La Plata to thirty-three Oriental following the incident as emergency teams continued their work. Notably, the dire situation prompted residents and local emergency services to address the aftermath, providing care and counseling for those affected by this unfortunate event.
As the community reels from the consequences of this blaze, it underscores the importance of safety measures in residential buildings, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly. This tragedy brings to light the need for enhanced fire safety protocols to prevent such incidents from repeating and to safeguard the lives of those living in densely populated areas.
It’s an emotional time for the residents of Almagro as they come to terms with the impact of this tragic fire. Community leaders and local authorities are expected to convene and discuss further measures to bolster fire safety in the neighborhood, ensuring that residents are never again put in harm’s way from such preventable disasters.
