A Tragic New Year’s Celebration: Fire in Crans-Montana

Dozens died at Swiss ski resort

Around 40 people lost their lives, and over a hundred were injured in a tragic fire during New Year’s celebrations at a bar in the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, according to police reports released Thursday.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin characterized the event as “one of the worst tragedies” in the history of the nation. “We recorded forty deaths and about 115 injuries, most of them severe,” declared Frédéric Gisler, the police chief of canton Valais, during a press conference in Sion, southwestern Switzerland.

Local authorities swiftly dispatched police, firefighters, and lifeguards to the popular ski destination, which started the new year with a “burning smell in the air,” based on media reports. The fire ignited around 01:30 GMT (00:30 GMT) at the Le Constellation bar, which has a capacity of 300 indoors and 40 on the terrace.

Investigations are underway to ascertain the fire’s cause, although authorities have ruled out any suspicion of an attack.

Fire Triggered by Sparklers

Moment of fire

An image published by local media suggests that sparks from flares attached to champagne bottles likely ignited the fire in Crans-Montana. Footage shows a crowded bar in celebration, with multiple patrons holding large bottles of champagne topped with lit sparklers.

Sparks from these flares evidently reached the ceiling, where acoustic panels—often made of highly flammable materials—were quickly ignited, leading to the catastrophic incident.

Eight French Citizens Missing

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that eight French citizens remain unaccounted for following the devastating fire. Initially, authorities noted approximately 40 fatalities and 115 injuries.

Injured Identified

The Italian ambassador to Switzerland has stated that as of Thursday night, 107 out of the 112 injured individuals have been identified. Valais authorities aim to provide a precise list of victims’ nationalities soon, prioritizing communication with affected families.

Critical Condition Alerts

According to Valais government president Mathias Reynard, of the 115 injured, at least 80 individuals are in critical condition. This figure mainly represents those treated by local medical facilities, but others in grave condition were also reported.

Survivor Testimonies on Safety Deficiencies

Survivors like Axel and Nathan revealed significant flaws in the venue’s safety protocols, pointing out the absence of emergency exits. This absence contributed to the ensuing chaos as the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the space.

International Aid Offers

Governments worldwide have expressed condolences and solidarity towards Switzerland. Offers have been made to assist with the reception of the critically injured, particularly those suffering from extensive burns requiring urgent medical care.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities, including Attorney General Béatrice Pilloud, confirmed that no suspects or arrests have been made as investigations continue. The focus remains on understanding the fire’s cause and ensuring fire safety compliance in such venues.
