Three out of four parents do not check who their children receive money from – news Sørlandet – Local news, TV and radio

238,000 parents can check their child’s history on Vipps. Only 50,000 do it monthly, the payment service informs news. This means that three out of four parents do not check where their children’s money comes from. This applies to children under the age of 15, where the parents have given consent for the child to create a Vipps account. Before Vipps took action this autumn, to make the process of parental control easier, the number was down to 3,600 a month. news wrote earlier this week that children between the ages of 8 and 10 are selling nude pictures of themselves. The Agder police seize such images and videos every week. Vipps is highlighted as one of several platforms where such trading takes place. – The police, Kripos and Økokrim have good contact with Vipps. I would like to praise that cooperation. At the same time, it is important that parents take the initiative to be close to what their children are doing online. That’s what Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl says, who visited Vipps’ head office in Oslo on Friday. Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl praises the cooperation the police have with Vipps. Strengthened cooperation with the police Since its inception in 2017, Vipps has worked with the police. The collaboration has been strengthened in recent years. – This is an area where we can really make a difference. We process huge amounts of data. This is something the authorities are very concerned about, and something you know about as a parent yourself, says Vipps leader Rune Garborg. Now about 20 people work in what they call transaction investigation. – They look for unusual patterns in transactions, and report to the police and authorities, says Garborg. He emphasizes that they must do their utmost to put an end to the social problem. He tells of an enormous commitment, competence and willingness to remove a major societal problem: – We must ensure that it is easy for parents to have an overview of their children’s transactions. When the parents have approved that the child receives Vipps, there is automatically a function that allows you to follow the child’s payment history. Many parents probably do not know about this solution. – When we create products and services, we try to make it as simple as possible for parents to have an overview. It is more important than anything else we do, says Garborg. Payment via a third party news is aware that children and young people can get help from a third party to accept money for nude pictures. It could, for example, be an “ally”, who receives the money in their account, and passes it on in the form of cash. Others are paid in gift cards or game money. Rune Garborg from Vipps says that uncovering suspicious transactions is among their most important work. We must cooperate with other countries and look at how we can ensure that the police have access to evidence on these platforms and have the opportunity to seize it. At the same time, we must take responsibility for what can be done nationally, says Enger Mehl. Parents must take responsibility The Minister of Justice encourages children and young people to contact the police if they have questions or need guidance anonymously. – It is easy to get in touch with the police on their Safe Chat service if you want to report something confidential, she says. At the same time, parents have a responsibility to make use of the possibility of parental control, says Enger Mehl. – It is important that the adults have a high level of awareness of internet literacy in order for the children to acquire it. I would encourage parents to have conversations with their children about how easy it is to be exploited online. Possibly adults seek information themselves, if they are unsure, she says.
