12 August 2024 at 10:57 Three activists expelled from the start of studies at UiB During Monday’s official opening of the start of studies at the University of Bergen, several activists demonstrated in solidarity with Palestine. Spokesperson for the demonstration, Michel Schafstaedt, tells news that there were around 20 demonstrators present at the opening. But only three of them were ordered by the police to leave the area until 12:00. They waved a Palestinian flag, and interrupted rector Margareth Hagen’s speech with chants such as “UiB has blood on their hands”, “Free Palestine” and “Boycott Israel”. – We hear you, said Hagen, but at the same time asked to be allowed to open the study in peace. The activists used ropes and climbed on the statue in the Museum Square. Two of them also took to the stage where they waved the flag and shouted slogans. Both security guards and the police helped to control the demonstrators, who were expelled from the scene. After being expelled, the activists remained outside the event and continued to shout slogans in support of Palestine during the rest of the ceremony. Students at UiB have demonstrated several times and demanded a full academic boycott of Israel. In June, they blocked the entrance to UiB’s offices on Muséplassen in Bergen, thereby preventing employees from getting to work.
