“Down with the Islamic Iranian regime.” This cry could be heard echoing up Karl Johans gate in Oslo on Saturday, followed by: “Women, life and freedom.” Thousands of people have gathered in support of the popular uprising in Iran, and will hold several appeals outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs throughout the day. Hand in hand One of those taking part in the demonstrations in Oslo is Shaina Salehy. – We stand here as women, people, Kurds and Iranians hand in hand to show our voice for them, says Salehy to news. According to her, the demonstration arose to show support for the popular uprising. – The Iranian regime oppresses women, freedom of expression and various groups of people in the country, she says and adds: – That is why we do not want Iranian diplomats here in Norway and ask Norway to close the Iranian embassy. The Kurdish flag is raised high among the demonstrators. Demonstration trains in support of the popular uprising in Iran went from Oslo Central Station to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday. The starting shot It has been over a month since 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died, after she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran for wearing her hijab “incorrectly”. The death was the starting point for nationwide demonstrations in the fight against the Iranian regime. People from all over the world have joined in support of the popular uprising in Iran. The residents of Oslo are no exception. More demonstrations in Oslo Earlier this autumn, several demonstrators tried to enter the Iranian embassy in Oslo. A total of 85 people were arrested. Nine of these were charged with damage to the embassy and/or violence against the police. Subsequently, several demonstrations have been registered in the capital. Just over a week ago, protesters gathered outside the Iranian embassy in Oslo again, after news of the fire in Evin prison in Iran’s capital, Tehran.
