Photo: Privat The pieces were slimy and bloody. This is from another period in the same year. Photo: Privat But it was the first time Kristina experienced the worst – when she saw a firm pink lump of tissue. The same day she had extreme period pains. When she got home from work, she saw the lump in the panty liner: Kristina washed the pink piece of tissue to see if it fell apart, but the lump was like a small intact piece of flesh. Photo: Private – At first I thought it was a fetus, which doesn’t make sense. I haven’t been with a boy in years. Kristina washed the piece of tissue, put it in a plastic bag and went to the GP. The doctor sent the lump of tissue in for testing. Two weeks later, she received an answer. The tissue was a piece of her uterine lining: Photo: Screenshot The 25-year-old thinks it’s a shame that there is so little awareness of the topic. She walked for a long time wondering what had happened. – I get really mad. In general, I think the information about women’s health sucks. I thought I was going to die – that there was something seriously wrong with me, she says. During the video by @helene.fosse on TikTok, where Kristina shared her experience, several commented that they had never heard of the phenomenon before. Many appreciate that Kristina told about what had happened to her. Others say they have experienced the same thing. The patients think they have been pregnant. Anja Døssland Holstad is head of department at the gynecology department, and specialist council leader in gynecology at Innlandet Hospital. She says that the phenomenon is called decidual cast, and that it is not dangerous. – Every time you have your period, the lining of the uterus bleeds out. But then it usually comes in pieces along with blood. But sometimes the mucous membrane can detach as a whole – and come out as a larger lump. But it is not very common. Have you experienced or heard of decidual cast before? ? Yes, this has happened to me Yes, I’ve heard of it No, this was new to me Show result Due to limited information and research, doctors do not know what causes this to happen. But they believe it may be associated with, among other things, hormonal contraceptives. – It is rare and can happen to anyone, but has been reported a little more often in those who use some forms of birth control pills. LARGE LUMP: – Some people find it a bit frightening, because a slightly larger lump comes out and sometimes it causes more menstrual pain, says Anja Døssland Holstad. Photo: ARVID TORSGARD / news Holstad himself has had patients who have experienced this. Patients often think the reason is that they have been pregnant. – When this lump comes out through the cervix, it can cause a little more pain. Some experience it a bit like a miscarriage, but it is not a pregnancy, she says. Holstad has some advice for you who experience this: – Don’t worry. It is not dangerous. Take painkillers with Paracet and Ibux. If you have other abnormal bleeding, contact your GP. Decidual cast A decidual cast is a large, intact piece of tissue that passes through the vagina in one solid piece. The tissue piece looks pink, fleshy and solid. It may have a shiny appearance because it is made up of tissue, mucus and blood clumped together. Due to limited information and research, doctors do not know what the exact cause is. But they believe it may be associated with, among other things, hormonal contraceptives. Once the tissue comes out, the symptoms will stop almost immediately. A decidual cast is not a signal of a serious condition. There is no evidence that this can lead to long-term negative side effects. Decidual cast can be very painful. In the days before, you may have symptoms such as: Painful abdominal cramps Heavy vaginal bleeding Severe discomfort Source: Webmd, a website that contains information related to drugs – one of the most visited health websites in the United States. Stop the pill Kristina never saw such lumps of tissue before she started on the pill. The 25-year-old believes the contraceptive may have been the cause in her case. WOULD LIKE TO DISCLOSE: Kristina hopes others who experience the same thing will not be as scared as she was. Photo: Privat After going on the pill for a year, she saw these lumps 3-4 times. In April last year, she stopped using birth control pills. Since then it has not happened again. Senior doctor Holstad says that if you are on the pill and experience this, you can try to see if another type of contraception can be the solution to the problem. – Especially if it hurts. Then you can try other contraception such as Cerazette, which is a progestogen pill. Then you won’t get the same structure of the mucous membrane every month, and you won’t bleed much either.
