This year there will be a white Christmas in many places – news Vestland

– It actually looks quite promising, says state meteorologist Eldbjørg Moxnes at the Meteorological Institute. The last few days have been cold in many places in the country. – And cold air settles over the whole country during the weekend. The forecast is of course a bit uncertain, but it looks like the cold will last for quite some time to come. This means that if you have snow now, you will most likely get to keep that snow for some time to come – and probably until Christmas. Have looked at the last 30 years – There will be more Christmas atmosphere when it is gone. That’s according to climate watcher Matilda Hallerstig at the Meteorological Institute. Here they have looked at the probability of snow on Christmas Eve based on statistics for the last 30 years. It is the inner part of Austlandet, Finnmarksvidda and the mountain area that is still the most snow-sure. – In some places it is 100 percent certain that there will be a white Christmas, such as in Tynset, Røros and Rauland. And while it is 90-100 per cent safe in some places, the figure shows, for example, that it is only 20 per cent safe in Bergen. – In Bergen there were seven years of white Christmas in the period 1991 to 2020, and the rest of the years there was no snow on Christmas Eve. It is in Western Norway that the winters are mildest in Norway, she says. Moxnes says that there is almost a week until Christmas Eve comes into the long-term forecast, but that it is getting more and more certain with each passing day – There will not be as much precipitation as there is now. But from next week there will be more low pressure. And if it rains, it will be like snow. Therefore, it actually looks quite promising for a white Christmas, with the caveat that there may be milder air that melts the snow. This is how it looks at Kråkerøy in Fredrikstad. The snow has come here too. Photo: Ingrid Mathilde Langvik / news Believe in white slopes In the last two days, a lot of snow has fallen in some places in both Møre and Romsdal and in Trøndelag. This has led to major problems. Moxnes says the heavy snowfall has calmed down and does not think this will continue either. – Are there certain places where it is completely unrealistic that there will be a white Christmas? – No, I don’t think so. If I were to guess, it will snow in most places. If not as a skier, then at least as a skier on the slopes. And with a little sprinkling, it will often be a little brighter and lighter outside in the darkest time. – We would rather have a white Christmas. It’s nice with the Christmas lights outside now, but the snow gives it an extra touch, says Moxnes. It doesn’t happen every year, but Borestranda on Jæren got rid of it during the Christmas weekend last year. Will it be like this this year, do you think? Photo: Brit Jorunn Svanes / news
