In Ole Paus’ gate in Elverum, the candles are lit to remember the vice singer who lived in the town, or “the ditch to the right of Hamar somewhere” for almost three years of his childhood. In 2019, Ole Paus had a street in Elverum named after him. It is not unusual for famous people to have streets named after them, but it usually happens after the person has passed away. The song ended up at the top of the Norwegian charts for eight weeks, and made the river fans react. The song about Elverum – written by Ole Paus In the middle of May and more snow to come The meteorologist keeps his word Now it’s snowing non-stop The winter that began In spring last year Is still far from over Maybe I’m a bad Norwegian Maybe I’m complaining for no reason OK I give up I’ll persevere I’ll shut up and hold on mouth After all, I’ve had it worse before After all, I’ve lived in Elverum Elverum Elverum Elverum The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow A rumor has it that the earth is round But you can pull on anything In Elverum Elverum is a ditch on the right For Hamar somewhere There is a forest enough here for the country Forest and grey-black sky And Gråberg cafe And leaden old dance People spew and drink And the fila grunts and some mumble twa And two and two go out And come in and spit blood And after a while people leave again And the fila shuts up Then it’s night in Elverum Elverum Elverum Elverum The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow A rumor has it that the earth is round But you can pull on anything In Elverum Glomma runs smooth and dirty Like an open wound Across Elverum It causes frost damage every winter And flood damage every spring And has a quagmire at the bottom A real sailor must have been On the South Sea and cut the bilge But the South Sea is far from here So I scatter on Glomma while And let my eyes follow the foam That drifts away from Elverum Elverum Elverum Elverum The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow A rumor will have it That the earth is round But you can draw on anything In Elverum Elverum Elverum Elverum The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow Rumor has it that the earth is round, but you can do anything in Elverum Elverum Elverum Elverum The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow Rumor has it that the earth is round, but you can do anything in Elverum According to the East Lender, a former business manager in Elverum is said to have thought that Paus did more damage to the city than what the Germans did in 1940. – We in Elverum were both surprised and horrified when the song came on. Eventually we understood that it was a zealot, and he reconciled with Elverum and the Elverum singers, says Jens Petter Madsbu, second tenor and spokesperson for the Elverum male choir. In January, the men’s choir had its 125th anniversary, and invited Ole Paus, among others, to stand on stage. – He was so inclusive and generous. He was grateful that he could be with us. We felt that it was big for him, and it was incredible generosity to show us, says Madsbu. With his distinctive voice, playful use of language and simple melodies, Ole Paus has been embraced by a wide audience since the 70s. Paus himself helped to shape and leave his mark on the performance, which filled two cultural centers in January. – We started the performance with him singing his version of the river song, then we took over and sang the actual river song. Before he started playing nidvisa si, he said “sorry”. – Now the nidvise has become a funny thing for river rummers, not an attack, says Madsbu. Shouting up In retrospect, Paus has referred to the song he wrote about Elverum as a love song. During the opening of Ole Paus’ gate in 2019, he said that he was terribly happy in the city. – Here I learned to have an emotional life. Elverum is very dear and close to me. There are many people who express that they don’t like me. They don’t have to like me. I don’t like myself either. But those who think that the song about Elverum is a jealous song, then they know nothing about love, said Paus. Ole Paus’ gate is located in Elverum. The street was named in 2019, four years before Paus passed away. Erik Hanstad, former mayor of Elverum, says that the nid song caused irritation and debate, but that the vice singer got away with the Elverum songs. – He has meant a lot to us. He has been here a lot, and we have become very fond of him Ole. We are on a first name basis with him for about half the town. We are incredibly proud that he has a relationship with our city and that he had it for many years, says Hanstad. He remembers Paus as a genuine and brilliant lyricist with a big heart. «Elverum Elverum Elverum. The snow is deep and Glomma is shallow. A rumor has it that the earth is round, but you can do anything in Elverum”, wrote Ole Paus in “The Song of Elverum”. He thought it was absolutely brilliant. We opened on 15 September 2019, it’s a day we won’t forget. He himself said that this was one of the finest things he had experienced as an artist. – Then we were proud, says the former mayor. Former mayor of Elverum, Erik Hanstad, lit candles in memory of Ole Paus.
