– I don’t want to deny anyone driving a car, but think very carefully before you hit the road in this area for the next 24 hours! That’s what chief engineer, Tore Jan Hansen at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration says. Early on Sunday, there were no reports of serious incidents or traffic problems on the roads in Eastern Norway and Southern Norway as a result of the snowy weather. But it is expected that there will be bigger problems towards the evening. – Think carefully before you drive a car in the snowy weather on Sunday, says chief engineer Tore Jan Hansen in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. He says the agencies will have a status meeting about the situation at 1000. An orange danger warning for snow has been issued on New Year’s Eve. 50–100 cm of snow and strong winds are forecast in many places. There are already large amounts of snow in Southern Norway. Now much more is expected. Photo: Erik Wiig Andersen / news Starts as rain State meteorologist, Bente Wahl says the latest forecasts have a somewhat higher temperature along the Sørland coast than was announced yesterday. This means that the large amounts of rainfall during the day on New Year’s Eve will mostly come as rain or sleet along the coast. – But from tonight the temperature will drop, and there will be a lot of snow, also along the coast during the night and tomorrow, says Wahl. Bente Wahl says the worst snow along the coast only increases in the evening, New Year’s Eve. Photo: MAGNE VELLE She says the orange warning for snow is firmly in place, and that the precipitation will also come as snow a little inland on New Year’s Eve. E18 from Arendal and eastwards towards Telemark can thus receive large amounts of snow also during the day on Sunday. – I would ask people not to drive. Also to facilitate access for emergency vehicles, she emphasizes. Currently only roads on the E18 near Grimstad. Photo: Erik Wiig Andersen / news Fears of power outages Even if the snowy weather can wait along the coast, large amounts of heavy snow are expected a little inland. It can quickly mean broken trees over the power lines. – In some places, there will be more than half a meter of snow, and in addition gales have been forecast along the coast. This weather forecast could challenge the power supply in the relevant areas, and we are therefore following developments in the weather closely. That’s what Leif Helge Skjelbred-Lahn, emergency manager at Glitre Nett, says. He further says that the company has a good dialogue with its contractors, who are ready to provide the necessary resources when needed. Glitre Nett fears that heavy snow and trees over the wires will cause problems. Photo: Eidsiva Energi
