Convicted Driver Sentenced for Dragging Policeman
Three months after the disturbing incident, the driver who dragged a policeman for 700 meters aboard a Ford Ranger truck in the Circunvalación Avenue of Córdoba has received a sentence of three years in conditional prison. Additionally, he has been banned from driving during this period.
The sentence, however, does not entail immediate imprisonment. The individual, identified only as P.M., must comply with strict obligations that add up to the three months he spent detained before being granted the conditional release. The case was adjudicated through an Abbreviated judgment procedure, where the accused accepted the charges and agreed to an arrangement with the Prosecutor’s Office and his defense.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, represented by Raúl Garzón, P.M. faced serious charges, including illegitimate deprivation of liberty and injuries, and initially, even the potential of homicide attempt due to the gravity of his actions. Eventually, the legal classification was downgraded to mild lesions as part of the agreed settlement approved by Judge Juan Fernández López.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded on Saturday, May 31, at approximately 18:45, in a section of the avenue located between Juan B. Justo and Alem. Law enforcement officers from the Caminera Police noticed a Ford Ranger with its low lights switched off. Upon stopping the vehicle, one of the officers approached the driver to request documentation and prepare the necessary report.
During the interaction, the officer detected a strong smell of alcohol from the driver, prompting him to call for backup to perform a breathalyzer test. The scenario escalated rapidly; the driver refused to provide his documentation, exhibited evasive behavior, and suddenly accelerated, dragging the officer approximately 700 meters before he managed to break free and fall onto the pavement.
The driver fled the scene but was pursued based on the account of a taxi driver who witnessed the event. He abandoned the vehicle in Villa La Trinidad and turned himself in to the authorities just 36 hours later, accompanied by his defense attorney.
Aftermath for the Victim
Fortunately, the injured policeman was able to recover from his injuries, although he experienced lingering effects that temporarily inhibited his return to regular duties. An economic settlement was also reached between the police officer and P.M., the terms of which remain undisclosed.
Sadly, this incident is not unique to Córdoba. Only a month prior, a driver evaded a police check by ramming an officer and dragging him on the hood of the car for six blocks. In that instance, the driver was an app-based taxi operator and had a four-year-old girl in the vehicle.
On that occasion, the incident took place at the intersection of San Juan and Vélez Sarsfield Avenue, where police conducted a routine check. As officers attempted to stop the vehicle for carrying passengers, the driver accelerated, resulting in another officer being dragged along. Fortunately, police were able to apprehend the suspect shortly after the incident.
These alarming occurrences highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures for law enforcement officers and underscore the dangers they face on a daily basis while executing their duties.
