Words like Ukraine and Putin are widely searched for. – A seriously difficult year Professor for media studies at UiO, Petter Bae Brandtzæg, says that the lists tell a lot about the year we will soon put behind us. – These top 10 lists for Google summarize the past year well, they actually do it every year. They reflect what we are curious about and what we want knowledge and information about. I am thinking in particular of the war in Ukraine. Ronander is a little surprised that the game Wordle is in first place. – It’s surprising, and it’s fun to watch. He explains that the game is popular and that it is not so easy to find, so many people search for the game via Google. Media expert Brandtzæg has another possible explanation. – It may be a result of the shutdown in January and February and that many people have been sitting at home a lot. Bilal is pleasantly surprised that he tops the list. – Wow. I was not aware of this. It’s completely wild. I can only say that I am very grateful and humbled by it, says Bilal to news. He goes on to say that the past year has been really busy. – 2022 has been quite a year, you could say. I got to experience a lot of cool things with a lot of nice people. I can say with my hand on my heart that it has been a year that will go down in my history book at least. The case engaged the whole world, setting fire to social media and news websites. The effect of the war in Ukraine is also noticeable on this list, Vladimir Putin’s name is at the very top. Petter Bae Brandtzæg thinks neither Depp nor Putin at the top is a surprise. – The trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard was a duvet lifter of dimensions. It shows that celebrities and gossip still sell. And he believes the war in Ukraine has given us a need to understand and learn. – We have had an enormous need for knowledge when we have had the war so close to us. Here there is a wide spectrum, everything from words related to the war in Ukraine, to health and holidays. Whitsun reigns supreme, but the list is also filled with diseases such as monkeypox and salmonella. We see that when people ask why electricity is so expensive and why Russia is attacking Ukraine, says Sondre Ronander. But the communications manager at Google Norway says it is important and healthy for society that people search for information. – What can be seen as positive in the whole thing is that people get an outlet for their questions and have a place to go to. We know that Google points to news sources that can be trusted. Professor Brandtzæg says Google has gained an important function, whether it is in work or private contexts. – Google is what we humans resort to, the most popular search engine. Google has taken over the old encyclopedias. It also gives Google a lot of power.
