These words and Norwegians were the most Googled in 2022 – news Culture and entertainment

2022 is singing its last verse, and it is time to look back on the last twelve months. What news and phenomena have characterized the year? Google Norway has created the trend lists for 2022, what we have been most interested in and searched for. And Norwegians have obviously been in the playful corner, literally. Because at the top of the search trends we find Wordle, the word game that has spread like an epidemic through the kingdom. But the war in Europe has also left its mark. Words like Ukraine and Putin are widely searched for. – A seriously difficult year Professor for media studies at UiO, Petter Bae Brandtzæg, says that the lists tell a lot about the year we will soon put behind us. – These top 10 lists for Google summarize the past year well, they actually do it every year. They reflect what we are curious about and what we want knowledge and information about. HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS: Sondre Ronander in Google Norway says TV programmes, war and the news image characterize the trend lists for 2022. Photo: Christopher Bechmann Head of Communications in Google Norway, Sondre Ronander, says this year’s lists show that it has been a very difficult year. – Some very serious things have happened in the world that have created an information gap. I am thinking in particular of the war in Ukraine. Ronander is a little surprised that the game Wordle is in first place. – It’s surprising, and it’s fun to watch. He explains that the game is popular and that it is not so easy to find, so many people search for the game via Google. Media expert Brandtzæg has another possible explanation. – It may be a result of the shutdown in January and February and that many people have been sitting at home a lot. It is clear that there have been many a keen Maskorama detective in the thousands of homes, because the two most wanted Norwegian celebrities both wore the mask this autumn: Daniel Kvammen and winner Bilal. Kvammen was also wearing his military uniform, as a participant in Kompani Lauritzen. Another universe that obviously captivates Norwegians is Every time we meet. Both Maj Britt Andersen, Øystein Greni and Jarle Bernhoft delivered cover versions on the program, and are on this year’s top 10 list. – What is shown on Norwegian TV also drives searches on Google. People search for who it is, and some visit old memories, read up on old greats again, says communications manager Ronander. PROFESSOR: Petter Bae Brandtzæg at UiO says the Google lists reflect the past year well. Photo: Werner Juvik / Werner Juvik Professor Brandtzæg is also not surprised that TV profiles are high. – This shows the power that large media and entertainment programs have when it comes to influencing what we should be curious about. Bilal is pleasantly surprised that he tops the list. – Wow. I was not aware of this. It’s completely wild. I can only say that I am very grateful and humbled by it, says Bilal to news. He goes on to say that the past year has been really busy. – 2022 has been quite a year, you could say. I got to experience a lot of cool things with a lot of nice people. I can say with my hand on my heart that it has been a year that will go down in my history book at least. Top 10 Norwegians: Bilal Daniel Kvammen Maj Britt Andersen Stig Millehaugen Øystein Greni Odd Roger Enoksen Nils Jakob Hoff Jarle Bernhoft Mari Maurstad Arne Treholt AT THE TOP: Bilal Saab has been on the radar of many Norwegians in the past year, especially as the character zombie in Maskorama. Photo: Julia Marie Naglestad Trial and war If you then add international celebrities to the list, it becomes clear that many have followed the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The case engaged the whole world, setting fire to social media and news websites. The effect of the war in Ukraine is also noticeable on this list, Vladimir Putin’s name is at the very top. Petter Bae Brandtzæg thinks neither Depp nor Putin at the top is a surprise. – The trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard was a duvet lifter of dimensions. It shows that celebrities and gossip still sell. And he believes the war in Ukraine has given us a need to understand and learn. – We have had an enormous need for knowledge when we have had the war so close to us. Top 10 people: Putin Bilal Johnny Depp Amber Heard Daniel Kvammen Tina Turner Maj Britt Andersen Clark Olofsson Mika Stig Millehaugen PUTIN: The Ukraine war and Russia’s leader have dominated the news in 2022. OLIGARK: Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is perhaps the world’s most famous oligarch. Many Norwegians have been curious about what an oligarch really is. Photo: AP Running out of questions When you finally look at the list of what Norwegians have searched for with the keyword “why”, it becomes clear again that the year 2022 has been a serious year. – It has been a difficult year for many. We see that when people ask why electricity is so expensive and why Russia is attacking Ukraine, says Sondre Ronander. But the communications manager at Google Norway says it is important and healthy for society that people search for information. – What can be seen as positive in the whole thing is that people get an outlet for their questions and have a place to go to. We know that Google points to news sources that can be trusted. Professor Brandtzæg says Google has gained an important function, whether it is in work or private contexts. – Google is what we humans resort to, the most popular search engine. Google has taken over the old encyclopedias. It also gives Google a lot of power.
