“We can indeed confirm that there has been GPS jamming,” stated a spokesperson for Von der Leyen, Arianna Podesta. The incident, described as part of the recently witnessed  hostile behaviors  exhibited by Russia, underscores the rising tensions in Eastern Europe. “We are of course aware, and accustomed in a certain way, to the threats and intimidation which are an integral part of the hostile behavior of Russia,” she added, emphasizing that such events are not new for the EU.

Fortunately, the plane landed “without difficulty” in Bulgaria, thanks to air traffic control’s prompt response. Podesta acknowledged that incidents like these have become  recurring occurrences  in Eastern Europe, which have heightened the sense of vulnerability in the region.

Details of the Incident

The tour that led Von der Leyen to Bulgaria kicked off on a notable note. Beginning on Friday, she embarked on a mission to visit EU countries situated along the  Eastern frontier  including Latvia, Finland, Estonia, and Poland. The primary goal was to demonstrate the EU’s  solidarity  with these nations, which often find themselves in precarious positions due to their geography and history of conflict with Russia.

As Von der Leyen’s flight approached Plovdiv Airport, the Bulgarian government reported a crucial detail: “During the approach for landing at Plovdiv airport, the GPS signal has disappeared.” In light of this troubling information, air traffic control immediately initiated alternative landing protocols, relying on land navigation methods to ensure the safety of the flight.

Upon arriving in Bulgaria, Ursula von der Leyen’s agenda included a visit to an  ammunition factory  that supplies Ukraine. This visit was planned as part of a broader narrative to strengthen the security of the  European continent  amidst ongoing tensions. Today, she continues her journey in Lithuania, where discussions on European security are critical.

The need for discussions surrounding Ukrainian security has become even more pressing in light of the recent developments. Intense negotiations are currently underway amongst Kyiv’s allies regarding the types of  security guarantees  that could be offered should a peace agreement be brokered with Moscow. In an alarming turn of events, last week the European Union’s offices in Kyiv were targeted and  damaged by Russian strikes . This prompted European diplomatic leaders like Kaja Kallas to convene with the Russian ambassador, signaling an urgent need to address these hostile actions.
