Night to Sunday and large parts of the morning, there has been enormous amounts of rain in Kvinnherad municipality. Several houses were isolated due to gravel that was washed away by rain showers. It must have happened when a river crossed its banks. Fire and rescue in the municipality were sent out in three hours on three assignments. The garden is gone One of those who have experienced that the house has been damaged due to the rain is homeowner Kenneth Fjelland. – It is very despairing, even though I am insured. But that’s not what counts. I have worked with the property for many years, so the garden is only washed away in a few hours, says Fjelland. The fire service has received several reports of flooding in the basement. Photo: Thomas Hallquist The property in Fjelland was flooded around eight o’clock today. The water overflowed when a pipe that was to lead the water under a municipal road flooded. Many assignments Thomas Hallquist from Kvinnherad fire and rescue, expects that there will be more messages throughout the day. – So far we have received reports of four incidents. One should not ignore that more comes as people discover what kind of injuries have come, says Hallquist. Large showers have washed away gravel around houses in slip roads. Photo: Thomas Hallquist – I do not have a total overview but I know that there are some slip roads along Bringedalsveien, where the road has simply been washed away. – We are talking about 10-12 houses that have problems getting to the main road, he says. Flood warning At the beginning of the week, NVE upgraded the flood warning to the red level for rivers and streams in Western Norway. Early today, a yellow danger warning was issued for torrential rain in the area. They warned against surface water in densely populated areas, with the risk of closed roads by rivers and streams. Gravel around the foundation wall was washed away by the rain. Photo: Thomas Hallquist – It will probably continue with construction and will gradually decrease in intensity. I envision that it will not exceed criteria above 15 millimeters per hour, says Sier Magnus Haukeland, meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Has given notice In Kvinnherad, Kenneth Helland has been in dialogue with the municipality for several years about doing something about the danger that may arise for his house when the water overflows. – And I have been bothered by this before, and I have informed the municipality that they must find another way to divert the water. Then I would have got rid of the problem, but it has not been done. Now there will be a new pedestrian and bicycle path, so then it will be possible to arrange. But for Fjelland, the injury has happened this time. His property is located on a steep slope, and the water that was there has already been drawn down towards the fjord.
