This is confirmed by the state’s governor, according to Reuters. This is the US’s first execution using this method, and it has been heavily criticized. Kenneth Smith was convicted of having carried out a murder-for-hire. The execution lasted around 22 minutes and occurred by inhalation of pure nitrogen gas via a face mask to induce oxygen deprivation. Smith appeared to be conscious for several minutes. For at least two minutes he appeared to be shaking and writhing on the stretcher where he lay strapped. Then followed several minutes of heavy breathing, until he stopped breathing. Alabama has called the method “the most painless and humane method of execution available.” UN experts and Amnesty International have called the method risky, experimental and torture-like. (NTB)
