The car was built by the 19-year-old ultra runner himself. In two days. – I have a little too much patience, so it took a few days. It’s quite simple. It is very small and I have the things I need. Bed and kitchen. It stops there. I drive it to a place I think is nice and run all day. When news meets Simonsson-Søndenå in Stjørdal, it is just before she will set off on a 24-hour ultra race during the NM week – where the goal is to run the longest in one day. IN ACTION: Simonsson-Søndenå started ultrarunning when she was 16. She is most satisfied with a competition where she ran 73 kilometers in six hours. For the 19-year-old, who is half Swedish and half Norwegian, he has a home outside the ordinary. She actually lives in the car she built herself. – I think it looks like fun. I like that it is light and that there are not so many things, and that you don’t have so much space, she explains the choice with. But as evil tongues might claim, car life offers challenges that others do not encounter. After engine trouble and other breakdowns, the van recently had to be repaired. – It’s in the workshop, so right now I’m homeless. It works very well anyway, she says, laughing. The ultra runner smiles from ear to ear when she talks about the car she bought for NOK 20,000 and has repaired herself. She points out that it is a scrap car, but would prefer to keep it. – Have you considered getting a new car? ABSOLUTELY HUGE: Simonsson-Søndenå seemed to enjoy one of the highlights this year with the NM week. Photo: news – It’s my home, after all. If you have a home, you will not want to move when you have just moved into it. – A few kilos of pure sugar a day Simonsson-Søndenå, who left secondary school this spring, apparently sees most things positively. Now she has her ambitions ready for the road ahead. – I have decided to become a full-time ultra runner. That’s what I do full time. According to Simonsson-Søndenå, doing ultra running requires a lot of preparation. She says that, among other things, she drinks water with sugar to get nutrition during long runs and sessions. – It’s not fun all the way, but you want to test the limit. A drink is sugar. I have sugar in the water, so it takes a few kilos of pure sugar a day. It’s not good for my health, but there is something that entices me about it, she says about the choice to start ultra running. Organizer for ultra running during the NM week, Lars Erik Gylland, tells news that it is important to get in quick nutrition when competing in something with such a high level of activity. – Many people use sugar as their main energy source during such a physical race and during races in general. There is quick access to energy. Simonsson-Søndenå adds that a lot goes on on a competition day, and that this is what she is mostly referring to when she talks about her sugar intake. – What did family and friends think when you said you were going to start it? – At the start they were very much like “oh, oh, oh, this might not be so good, how good is this for your health?”. They were a little unsure because I was so young, but it has been a little different. But now everyone says: “drive on, it will surely be great fun”. When they see that I have survived a few distances, it seems to be going well. – What is the goal of ultra running? – That I should live on it comfortably – that I have what I need. Now I am homeless. It’s just a matter of building up sponsors, then you’ll manage, I think. Simonsson-Søndenå had to break the race on the first day due to pain in one foot. She is nevertheless happy when news switches on the line after the competition. – I have plenty of time and do a lot of this for the experience, she says.
