– The water level in Sønderborg reached well over two metres. The water has not been this high on those edges for over 100 years, says meteorologist at Danmarks Radio, Thomas Mørk. In addition to violent winds and elevated water levels, large parts of Denmark have also been affected by heavy rain. Water everywhere In Præstø, masses of water rushed through the town, after the lock gate at the harbor in the South Zealand town burst. Work to secure the city continued throughout the night. In an attempt to stop the huge bodies of water, bales of straw have been placed on roadsides to prevent the road from being flooded, and to relieve the pumps at the sluice gate. In several places in the country, trees have been taken by the wind and fallen over roads. According to Ekstra Bladet, two cars must have been pinned under a tree. Two people were in one car and a family with three children was stuck in the other. All persons were taken to hospital for a check-up. The accident happened on a country road outside the town of Ans in Silkeborg municipality. In Aabenraa and Kolding, water pipes several hundred meters long burst, which resulted in the masses of water flowing into the center and towards houses along the coast. During the night, Sønderborg was also hit hard. However, it was not quite as bad as feared, and no one was injured. This is what the Southern and Southern Jutland Police and the South-East Jutland Police write in a press release. A total of 3,000 households in 90 areas have been without electricity. On Saturday morning, the wind has started to subside and the water level is dropping, and many people have already had their electricity restored, writes Ekstra Bladet. The storm has also had a major impact on air and ferry traffic in Denmark. TV 2 Nord writes that a 332 meter long ship has come loose from the quay in Frederikshavn, which has led to all ferry traffic in the area being suspended. No one is said to have been injured in connection with the incident. In addition, 142 flight departures were canceled during Friday at Copenhagen Airport. Today, operations are back to normal at the airport. The Danish weather institute DMI nevertheless warns of strong winds and elevated water levels throughout the weekend.
