– If you look at statistics, it’s pretty good. That is Jakob Asserson Ingebrigtsen’s answer to questions about how he wants to rank Sunday’s world record in the 3000 meters against his previous record run. The sober answer is by no means an understatement. Based on statistics, 7.17.55 in the 3000 meters is his best performance in his career. According to World Athletics’ points scale, the time corresponds to 1320 points. Transferred to other distances, only Kelvin Kiptum’s marathon world record (2.00.35 – 1322 points) has a higher score of the world records for male runners in the distances from 800 meters up to the marathon. Here’s what 1,320 points equates to in a couple of other events: 1,500 meters: 3.24.82 (Hicham El Guerrouj’s current world record is 3.26.00) 5,000 meters: 12.30.68 (Joshua Cheptegei’s current world record is 12.35.36) American Bernard Lagat himself has a personal record for 1500 meters of 3.26.34, which he points out himself in a post on X. – I have always believed that the world record for 3000 meters of 7.20.67 is the hardest to beat. In my opinion, it is more difficult than the world record for 1,500 metres, writes Lagat, and calls Ingebrigtsen’s performance “wild”. – I am sure that if it had been colder, he could have run two or three seconds faster, says Ingebrigtsen’s former Polish rival, Marcin Lewandowski, to emphasize that the conditions with a good 30 degrees and sunshine were not perfect during Ingebrigtsen’s record run either. Here’s what 1320 points equate to on the World Athletics scale 1500 metres: 3.24.82 One mile: 3.41.07 2000 metres: 4.41.98 3000 metres: 7.17.55 3000 meters steeplechase: 7.46.97 Two miles: 7.51.47 5000 meters: 12.30.68 10.000 meters: 26.02.83 Half marathon: 56.46 Marathon: 2.00.42 Here are the current world records: 1500 meters: 3.26.00 (Hicham El Guerrouj) – 1302 points One English mile: 3.43.13 (Hicham El Guerrouj) – 1292 points 2000 meters: 4.43.13 (Jakob Ingebrigtsen) – 1307 points 3000 meters: 7.17.55 (Jakob Ingebrigtsen) – 1320 points 3000 meters hurdles: 7.52.11 (Lamecha Girma) – 1295 points 5000 meters: 12.35, 36 (Joshua Cheptegei) – 1302 points 10,000 meters: 26.11.00 (Joshua Cheptegei) – 1306 points Half marathon: 57.31 (Jacob Kiplimo) – 1288 points Marathon: 2.00.35 (Kelvin Kiptum) – 1322 points This could be the next record Former athlete Sindre Buraas is one of many who have been impressed by Ingebrigtsen. Buraas himself took part in the WC at 5000 meters in 2013 and 2015. – He continues to impress me with his ability to produce so many good results time after time. He never runs bad races, says Buraas, and continues: – That he manages to have such consistently good production and simply set a world record by such a good margin, says a little about the legend he is becoming. He is clear that he believes Ingebrigtsen also has the level to set a world record in the 5000 metres. – I haven’t worked out which is the most difficult, but it’s probably connected, the record for 3,000 and 5,000 metres. If you manage one, you can manage the other, he believes. Buraas receives support from news’s athletics commentator Jann Post. – The world record for 5000 meters is about 60.5 seconds per lap. Then we are almost two and a half seconds slower than what he did today. I think he had come very far and I think he could set a world record in the 5,000 meters today, says Post. – I am absolutely sure that he has a good chance of the world record at 5,000 metres. If you take it, then by definition you have a chance at the 10,000 meter world record, says the commentator. – Three completed, seven to go Ingebrigtsen opened up last year that he has flashed ten records that he is chasing, more or less everything between 1500 meters and the marathon. He has already managed it in three of them: 2000 metres, 3000 meters and two English miles. – Three completed, seven to go, writes Ingebrigtsen on Instagram. In both 1500 meters and one English mile, he has well under a second down on the world records of Hicham El Guerrouj. He still retained the European record and the silver medal. – If he takes the 1,500 record, it won’t add up to much. Then I think it will be a hair’s breadth, but it will be important for him to take it in the next couple of three to four years, because the other records can wait until later in his career, says Post. – If I were him, it would have been more urgent to try for the 1,500 meter record than the 5,000. If I had had a goal of taking everyone together, I would probably focus on the 1,500 meters, says Buraas. Ingebrigtsen himself was thinking the same thing when he was asked by news ahead of Sunday’s race. – I think I will chase world records for 1,500 and one English mile, and only when I manage to do that, then I will consider other things. But it is an enormously difficult task. Former 1500 meter competitor Marcin Lewandowski believes it is entirely possible for the Sandnes runner to take the given record. – I believe in it. Everything is possible for him. «Sky is the limit». I hope he can do it with us next year, says the Pole to news. Meeting the 1500m rivals A chance to lower his own personal best of 3.26.73 to under 3.26.00 may come in Zurich on September 5, where Ingebrigtsen will run the 1500m against Josh Kerr and Cole Hocker, among others. – It is clear that a lot can happen. There is still a good while until the next race. But I feel ready and look forward to putting in some work and doing as well as we can there, says Ingebrigtsen. And even if Sunday’s record run should indicate a crazy world record also in the 1500 metres, Post points out that it is far from automatic. – There is no calculator job, what can be done in other exercises. All exercises have their own lives, and so the statistics give a clue that of course he has a chance. That is not to say that he will run 3.24 in the 1500 next week. Published 27.08.2024, at 05.34
