Masoud Pezeshkian will be Iran’s next president after winning the second round of the election, the country’s Ministry of the Interior has announced. All the candidates were handpicked by the Iranian regime, but Pezeshkian is considered somewhat more reform-friendly and open to dialogue with the West than the other candidates. He beat arch-conservative rival Saeed Jalili. Voter turnout ended at 49.8 per cent, which is around 10 percentage points higher than in the first election round. Several student organizations called for a boycott of the election.
