– We chose to replace the hybrid car with an electric car. The range has become so good that it was future-proof to buy an electric car. In addition, it is good for the environment, says Kjetil Moen Vikse from Haugesund. He is not the only one who has chosen an electric car over a plug-in hybrid. In 2021, well over 38,000 plug-in hybrids were sold in Norway. Last year, the number was just over 16,000. A drop of a whopping 58 per cent in one year. The sale of plug-in hybrids continues to plummet. In the first two months of this year, the number has been further halved, according to the Road Traffic Information Council (OVF). Norway is the best in the world Today, four out of five new cars sold in Norway are electric cars. As recently as 2019, this figure was two out of five. In other words, there is no doubt that the electric car has taken over from the plug-in hybrid and other cars with fossil fuel. In recent years, fees have increased for hybrid cars. It has also affected the case of this type of car. Photo: Åse Karin Hansen / news – Norway is the best in the world in this area, says Lars-Henrik Paarup Michelsen. He is the day-to-day leader of the Norwegian Climate Foundation. Lars-Henrik Paarup Michelsen, day-to-day manager of the Norwegian Climate Foundation. Photo: Ronald Hole Fossaskaret / news He registers that countries such as Sweden, England and Germany are about to catch up. – It is gratifying. We are seeing a shift in a major automotive industry. We see the effect of this in Norway. The selection is so large that more and more people see the electric car as a perfectly good first choice, says Michelsen. Still a way to go There are over 4.2 million vehicles in Norway. Figures from the Norwegian Climate Foundation show that there are 632,192 emission-free vehicles in Norway. A share of 15 percent. There are approximately half a million vans in Norway. Here, the proportion of emission-free vehicles is 4.46 per cent. For motorcycles, the share is less than 1 percent. – In the passenger car market, the product selection has improved, and then electric cars have become a real alternative. This has not happened for the other vehicles, but we see that something is going on, says Lars-Henrik Paarup Michelsen of the Norwegian Climate Foundation. He believes that the government can help here as well. – Politics and the market must work together here. It is important that the public sector uses its bidding power to make demands when purchasing vehicles. Then you can push the market to create emission-free solutions, says Michelsen. Does not recommend hybrid now Møller Bil is Norway’s largest car dealer chain and sells brands such as Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen. They no longer advise their customers to buy plug-in hybrids. Øyvind Skovli, communications director at Møller bil. Photo: Kilian Munch – It’s about the fact that the electric car has become so good in several price ranges. They are adapted to the needs of Norwegian car buyers. People have the opportunity to choose zero-emission cars. They know that, and that is very positive, says communications director Øyvind Skovli. The range of electric cars now is so good that hybrids are becoming redundant. – I am very satisfied with the electric car I have now. It is very pleasant to drive. So I probably won’t go back to a hybrid car, says new car buyer Kjetil Vikse Moen. Kjetil Vikse Moen does not think he and his family will go back to hybrid cars. Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news – The decline is as expected. There have been many more electric cars on the market with a long range, plenty of space and trailer hitch. Then it’s easier to use the electric car in everyday life, says communications manager Ida Krag at the National Association of Bicycle Transporters. Emission-free in 2025 The aim in Norway is that all new cars sold in 2025 must be emission-free. The decline among plug-in hybrids shows that the car dealership is on the right track. – The hope is that the electric car will take over the entire market and replace the plug-in hybrid, which we see is the last powertrain to have shares from electric cars, says communications director Øyvind Skovli at Møller bil. The Norwegian Climate Foundation welcomes the fact that the 2025 target is about to be reached. – Norwegian electric car policy has been a success, says Michelsen. He nevertheless warns both the people and the governing authorities that the job of getting the car fleet emission-free is far from done.
