The columns at the Riksdagen were smeared with blood-red paint on Wednesday morning. According to the Finnish national broadcaster Yle, it is a demonstration against turf mining organized by the activist groups Elokapina and Swedish Återställ Våtmarker. In modern large-scale peat farming, the vegetation and the top layer of peat are removed. Activists believe this is a threat to the environment as it destroys all animal and plant life in the original bog, including seed banks and most of the microorganisms. According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, ten activists have been arrested for vandalism against the Riksdag in the Finnish capital.
