The polling stations closed at 23:00 on Sunday evening. The first report from the polling stations indicates that the right-wing coalition gets 41-45 percent of the vote and a majority in parliament, writes the Reuters news agency. It is the TV channel Rai that has published the polling station survey. The right-wing populist Giorgia Meloni, who is the leader of the party in Italy’s Brothers, could become the country’s next prime minister. The far-right coalition also consists of the parties Ligaen and Fremad Italia. Italy’s brothers get between 22 and 26 percent of the vote and thus appear to be the largest party in this year’s election, according to the election day poll for the news agency Ansa. The Social Democratic PD, which is led by former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, together with its three partner parties get between 25.5 and 29.8 percent of the vote. The Five Star Movement, which is not part of any coalition, gets between 13.5 and 17.5 percent, according to the forecasts. Giorgia Meloni could become Italy’s first female prime minister, and the first far-right leader in the country since Benito Mussolini. Controversial statements Meloni has allied himself with the far-right League party and party leader Matteo Salvini, who, like Meloni, wants to crack down on illegal immigration. She has also teamed up with the party of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Forward Italy. Meloni, who is 45 years old, has campaigned under the slogan “God, country and family”. Meloni has made a number of controversial statements in the election campaign, including in a speech in support of the Spanish far-right party Vox. – They are going to say that we are dangerous, extremists, racists, fascists, deniers and homophobes, thundered Meloni, with reference to holocaust deniers. She ended with the slogans “Yes to natural families! No to the LGBT lobby! Yes to sexual identity! No to gender ideology!”. In retrospect, Meloni has apologized for the tone she used, but not the message. Important issues The election campaign was characterized by Russia’s war in Ukraine and the energy crisis. These issues have partly divided the right. Meloni has expressed support for Ukraine and is against Italy borrowing money to help people with their electricity bills. League leader Matteo Salvini has taken a more pro-Russian stance, questioning the sanctions against Russia and calling for more aid to crisis-hit Italians. The right-wing parties have also emphasized migration, tax cuts and strengthening the economy. The centre-left has promoted social justice, climate and international cooperation. Record low voter turnout On Sunday evening, polls showed that voter turnout was at a record low, and had fallen by around 7 percent. When the polling stations closed, only 64.7 per cent of those eligible to vote had cast their vote. It is a new bottom listing. The previous one came in 2018, when 73.7 percent of those eligible to vote voted. Final election results are expected early Monday.
