In the last week there have been four fires on Frøya. The police see no logical reason why the fires started, and have therefore launched an investigation. – As there is such a short time between the incidents, and that they are so close to each other, we suspect that it is the same perpetrator. That’s according to police chief at Hitra police station, Helene Glømmen Skuland. So far, the police have no suspects in the case. Seeing the fires in context On the 9th of July, fires started on two islets within a short period of time. – There are no buildings nearby, and there is no electricity on the islets either. Therefore, we suspect that it is arson. There is nothing else to indicate that a fire will start there, says Skuland. Just five days later, a fire started in a nearby outbuilding. This building was not connected to electricity either. On the night of Tuesday, a fire was reported in a garage approximately 200 meters away. Skuland says that there was no electricity in the part of the garage that started to burn. – Difficult to prevent Duty fire chief in Trøndelag fire and rescue, Sverre Hogstad, says fires on islets and reefs make extinguishing jobs more difficult. – It is challenging when there are such incidents where we cannot drive. He thinks it is up to the police to find out whether the fires may be arson or not. The fire service works daily with prevention in relation to the use of open fire during the forest fire season. – But it is of course difficult to prevent people who have the purpose of setting things on fire, he says. Asking for tips – So far we have been out on site and carried out crime scene investigations. We have spoken to witnesses. Interviewed both witnesses and also the fire brigade who were at the scene, says Skuland. The police have no suspected perpetrator yet, and are asking for tips. – If there is anyone who has seen or heard something that can shed light on the matter, or if there is anyone with information that can help us, then we would like to be contacted.
