– Young people now have a greater chance of getting a job. It is positive, says Sondre Kirkhus. Last summer he himself had a summer job for the very first time, in the park service in Kristiansand municipality. He himself has secured a job at the same place this year, but many other young people are looking. Recent figures from Finn.no show that they have the margins on their side. More than 1,400 advertisements for summer jobs are now out in the search service. That is more than twice as many as just five years ago. And the figures do not surprise director of working life at NHO, Nina Melsom. – Two out of three of our member companies say they have an unmet labor need. The reason is probably linked to the pandemic and the current situation where the demand for labor is high, says Melsom. Sondre is a student at an agricultural school and is deployed with the park service one day every two weeks. He is happy about this opportunity. You actually feel like you’re getting paid to have fun, he says. Lilly Mari Skalle (18) was only 15 the first time she got a summer job. Now she is on the hunt again. – I think it’s great that there are so many jobs this year. Because then all possibilities are open, she says. Lilly Mari says many people naturally want a summer job to earn their own money, but believes there are many other advantages as well. – You get more ideas about what you want to work on and learn to become independent, she says. Teo Brøvig Almås (16) is at the summer job fair in Kristiansand. He is considering applying for a summer job at Ikea or Burger King. – I was and spoke to them in town and it seems interesting. Angelina Genilke (17) and Frida Mari Svellingen (17) will both have summer jobs this year. Angelina will work in Dyreparken for the second year in a row. Frida Mari will apply for a summer job in a shop. – Be yourself Angelina believes it is important to appear motivated when applying for a summer job. She also believes references are important. She herself sent references from a previous job and a teacher when she applied. – Be yourself and don’t be afraid to apply, is her advice. But what advice do employers give? You can find the answer here: Lowered the age limit Ikea previously had an age limit of 18 to work for them. This has now been lowered to 16 years. HR manager at Ikea Sørlandet, Merethe Konningen, says they did this to give the young people an opportunity to enter working life earlier. – If they are hired as 16-year-olds, they will probably stay with us longer. We depend on competence and continuity. Merethe Konningen at Ikea Sørlandet is looking for young summer temporary workers at the summer job fair. Every Saturday and Sunday she got up at 6 a.m. to sell Dagbladet on the door. The hotel director believes it is wise to get a summer job as early as possible. With them, for example, several 16-year-olds have stood at reception. – The point of a summer job is to learn to take responsibility. In addition, you get the pleasure of earning your own money.
