She was born on 1 September 1940 in the town of Lillebonne in France. Her writing has been largely influenced by growing up in a working-class family in France. She likes to write based on her own life, but takes up political themes. She has already received several French and international literary prizes, including the Renaudot prize for the breakthrough novel Father (1983).
