The Meteorological Institute has issued several danger warnings in Northern Norway – will affect air traffic – news Troms and Finnmark

The northernmost counties do not get a break from challenging weather. On Monday it did not look as if the sea boots could be put away, but now a lot of snow is expected in the north. From Wednesday evening to Friday morning, a lot of snow is expected for parts of Vest-Finnmark, Troms and Nordland. Most of the snow is expected on the night of Thursday. – Locally, between 20-30 cm of snow can fall in a day. Areas above 200 meters above sea level and inland areas are most at risk. Consequences of the expected snowfall could be that vulnerable infrastructure is affected by the weight of the snow, longer travel times and locally difficult driving conditions. It is only a short week since high temperatures and rainfall caused floods and flooding in several places in the north. Among other things, 500 people were isolated in Lyngen municipality, several roads in Finnmark were washed out by large amounts of water and several cabins at a campsite in Tromsø were flooded. High water level But that’s not enough, late Wednesday evening and night into Thursday high water levels are also expected in coastal and fjord areas in Northern Troms and Western Finnmark. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute advises everyone to be careful in the beach zone due to high waves, and asks boat owners to check their moorings. – When it comes to the water level warning close to the coast, it is good to secure loose objects in the beach zone and check moorings on boats, says meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute, Hanne Beate Skattør. A yellow warning has been issued for high water levels in Troms and Finnmark. Graphic: Meteorological Institute She does not believe that the expected high water will cause as much damage as the water and precipitation did last week. Then the county road between Hopseidet and Skjånes in Gamvik municipality was flooded. – Now the precipitation is coming as snow, so it is probably not floods that are most relevant this time. There will be more consequences from snow, especially in inland areas, she says. Skattør says that the wind, combined with a lot of snow, can lead to snow drifts in some places. Traffic challenges The sometimes strong wind, combined with heavy rainfall, can lead to challenges for air traffic on Wednesday. – It’s stormy weather, so for air traffic this can mean poor visibility due to heavy snowfall, which can then cause problems. There will probably be periods of better visibility between the showers, but that can certainly cause delays, she says. WIND: At Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes, about 20 mm of precipitation is expected, mainly as rain, as well as wind gusts of up to 25 m/s on Wednesday. There will also be challenging driving conditions in northern Norway, in addition to snow drifts in some places. – If you don’t have to set out on a long trip, then perhaps you can wait.
