Dozens of patients have been injured as a result of faulty operations Omarchanov has been responsible for. The Norwegian Health Authority has taken away his authorization as a doctor in Norway. The trial against him started this week. Omarchanov himself did not appear in court, and is staying in Germany. He is charged with breaching the Health Personnel Act after a botched operation in 2019. Prosecutor Hans Olav Røyr has asked for a prison sentence of 18 days. – He had a lack of understanding of his own professional limitation, and an inability to be corrected, said Røyr in his procedure. Criticizes the management – Omarchanov was appointed as “production man” in Flekkefjord to maintain operations. He was exploited by management, says orthopedist Rune Gladhaug at Sørlandet Hospital in his testimony. He worked together with the doctor in Kristiansand, and believes that the ten-year-old doctor has been “pushed under the wagon” by the management. – Most of the management have gotten away. In the “peak year” 2017, he performed 650 operations there. Colleagues reported deviations and unacceptable behavior for several years, but without consequences. Nurses warned of abuse, and that they were afraid of him. Omarchanov himself has written to the Norwegian Health Authority that he was encouraged by management. Quantity was more important than quality, he writes. – He took risks, he did it. Beyond what the rest of us usually do, said orthopedist Jan Erik Haaland when he testified on Friday. He has been a colleague of the accused doctor both when he worked in Flekkefjord and in Kristiansand. Finn Åge Olsen had to amputate, and ended up in a wheelchair after being operated on incorrectly, but the case is outdated. Only the case of Svein Are Auestad has come before the court. He has also described him as “an artist”. Haaland has been brought in as a witness by the doctor’s defender. – District politics The doctor worked at the hospital in Flekkefjord for eleven years. There he worked as a senior doctor in orthopedics, without having the right specialisation. He was later moved to Kristiansand to train as an orthopedist. There, too, he made a mistake. Sørlandet Hospital has been under police investigation as a result of the botched operations. It ended with a corporate fine of NOK one million. He believes the hospital has sacrificed patient safety to pursue district politics. – It was not the patient’s best interests that were in focus, Berg said when he testified in the trial on Thursday. Former clinic manager in Flekkefjord, Annette Solinski, acknowledged in court that operational considerations may have led to surgeons in Flekkefjord operating too much in relation to their competence. – It may have happened, but it shouldn’t have. Quality should come first.
